JAKE HOLMES - THE ABOVE GROUND SOUND OF - PSYCH / FOLK ROCK - NEW
Tracklist
LPI’m not a huge Led Zeppelin fan, though I think they are a great band. Recently I have been listening to allot of Led Zeppelin, going through certain albums in their discography(I haven’t heard them all), luckily I looked up “Dazed and Confused” because it is probably one of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs and it led me to the original writer/composer of the song, which is this guy: Jake Holmes (WHO THEY DIDN’T GIVE CREDIT TO!). Which made me check out this record, which has really surprised me with how good it is. His version of “Dazed and Confused” isn’t as epic, but in my opinion it is good as the Led Zeppelin version. This is a great folk/rock album that sometimes has very “psychedelic ”sounds, like a good number of the rock albums that came out during the 60s and 70s. The guitar playing is great, specifically on the track that led me to this album in the first place “Dazed on Confused”. I will admit on my first listen to this album I wasn’t to crazy about Holmes as a vocalist, but after spending more time with this record I realized that jones has a voice that accompanies his style of music fantastically. I’m not saying he is a “great” singer, but for the type of music he makes, his voice is works very well, specifically on tracks like “Genuine Imitation Life” and “Did You Know”. My favorite tracks on this album after a couple listens are “Dazed and Confused” and "Genuine Imitation Life”. Another great track is “Signs of Age”, a song that just has a great nostalgic feel. I don’t have a least favorite track, there are no horrible songs on this album in my opinion. I’d recommend anyone who is a fan of the “folk rock” from this era (60s/70s), specifically fans of albums by Nick Drake, Tim Buckley and Bob Dylan to check this out. After listening to this, I am sure had Led Zeppelin recognized Holmes when “Dazed and Confused” came out, he would’ve achieved allot more fame than he did. It's sad that this album is as overlooked as it is.
