Description
From the archive of noted James Brownj historian, Alan Leeds.
Incredibly rare....very few of these metallic acetate master references were cut. Few survived as most were eventually scrapped.
UNISSUED in this form, this is the complete, unedited, 8:50 version of (YOU) CAN'T KEEP A GOOD MAN DOWN, a funky Brown vocal accompanied by Fred Wesley and The J.B.'s including John "Jabo Starks on drums.
Two takes of this jam were recorded September 2, 1971 at the same session as The J.B.'s GIMME SOME MORE. Both vocal tracks are audible in this mix which was mastered at Sterling Sound on November 11, 1971 (the date on this acetate). For unknown reasons, this track sat in the can for over ten years!
Long after having left Polydor Records, In 1983, with added percussion, a new mix surprisingly appeared on Brown's BRING IT ON album on his own Augusta Sound label.
NOTE: Acetate reference discs are not intended for repeated play - their function was as a TEST record.. HOWEVER, these play and sound great!
