Description
JAMES JOYCE reading
“Anna Livia Plurabelle”
from “Finnegan’s Wake”
The book was a work in progress when
this custom record was made by HMV in
London on September 9, 1929.
It bears the matrix numbers
Cc 17594-2 and Cc 17595-2T1.
The ledgers list Mr. C.K. Ogden of the
Linguaphone Institute as the client. It
was issued on the Orthological Institute
label, probably in early 1930, with a
10, Kings Parade address. This limited,
unnumbered edition was sold,
apparently exclusively, at Shakespeare
and Company, the Parisian bookstore
owned by Sylvia Beach.
All other issues are
copied from this recording.
The two most recent Ebay sales were in 2014, where
one with a scratched side 2 sold for $ 63.00, and the
other, in 2012, in VG to VG+ condition, for $ 800.
This example is superior to either,
E+ on both sides, with no visible scratches.
