James : Laid A1/B1/C1/D1 2LP 1999

This first repress from 1999 is in superb condition and 'as new' is a correct call.  I suspect this was purchased as a collectors' item not to be played and based on the clarity and depth of the audio my play grading may well be the first time the vinyls have been on a turntable.  There is still some vinyl 'flecking' around the spindle holes which further confirms this theory.  Honestly the audio is STUNNING and there is no interference on any of the four sides, the sonic quality is outstanding!

lt may not be a first pressing but this reissue is still highly regarded and both records are also pressed on 180g vinyl which can only add to the overall depth of sound.  The cover is also in superb condition and the original insert is also in perfect shape.  This is without doubt a FINAL UPGRADE album, it just could not play any better.

Visual description

The vinyls are in beautiful condition and still have that 'shop fresh' look with an immaculate jet-black glossy sheen.  There are no marks or scratches and just one faint hairline on S2 that obviously has no affect on the audio.  The labels are 'as new' with no marking or spindle and still have some vinyl 'flecking' around the spindle holes.

Play grading

S1 begins with a stunning version of the 'Out To Get You' which plays with a clarity and warmth that is outstanding.  It is such a quiet track and yet there is not even a single dust tick - it could not play any better and Mint is more than deserved.  'Sometimes (Lester Piggot)' is 'as new' with a power and depth that cannot be underestimated.  'Dream Thrum' also plays to the same standard with literally no intrusion.  All tracks on S1 grade as Mint the sonic quality is just amazing!

S2 also impresses on every level - as stated I truly believe this classic album has never been played and that is reflected in the overall 'sound' that has a definition and resonance that is STUNNNING!  All the tracks are of course so good but 'Five-O' is a real highlight here.  What a version!  All three tracks grade as Mint with not even a minus necessary!

The quiet intro on 'P.S.' once again shows off the impeccable clarity we have on offer here and the remainder of this superb track does not disappoint either.  I am already running out of superlatives for this double album but needless to say it grades as Mint such is the quality.  The other two tracks on the side also play with sublime quality - 'Knuckle To Far' is particularly impressive when you consider how quiet it is and again there was not one dust tick during the playback.  The bass is so strong and deep here, stunning audio!

S4 keeps up the standard and plays with exceptional quality from start to finish with...no interference.  'Low Low Low' is faultless and the classic title track 'Laid' then plays with incredible clarity, power and depth.  The super quiet 'Lullaby' plays beautifully with no 'background' and the atmospheric 'Skindiving' ends the album with stunning quality...hardly surprising!  Once again all four tracks on this side grade as Mint as there is just no 'background' of any kind.

In summary this first repress just could not play any better.  In my opinion it is obvious it has never been played before, the clarity and definition of the audio certainly suggest that.  'As new' sums it up perfectly and this is easily a FINAL UPGRADE album - every note is so sharp and precise and that includes every intro and fade out also plus the dead wax between every track.  A STUNNING album!

The Cover & Inlay

The cover is near perfect with barely any shelf wear.  In fact there is only one minor rub on the bottom edge next to the bottom left corner and a couple of very small faint creases near the same area on the front cover.  There is also one small indent/mark on the back cover but is only very minor.  It has been preserved so well and has retained its original shape and structure extremely well, a superb example!  The original insert is 'as new' with no wear.

The vinyls are contained inside plain white poly-lined inners which are in great condition.

Play tested on my Rega P2 Turntable / Denon PMA-520AE Amp / B&W 684 Speakers

The records have been cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine
