JAMES WHIPPLETREE O'BRIEN -- The Whip -- ex. rare, early-to-mid 1950's U.S. album. Smokin' hot and apparently completely unknown album of killer uptempo R&B instrumentals and slow ballads from pianist O'Brien, on the legendary R&B-blues-early rock label Combo Records (Chuck Higgins, Peppermint Harris, Joe Houston, Johnny Moore's 3 Blazers etc.) Almost nothing seems to be known about O'Brien, quite sadly because he was enormously gifted -- he apparently played with Big Jay McNeeley in the late 1940's and early 1950's. Song titles like "Take This Boogie" and "Saturday Night" should give you a feel for the wild, carnal, unhinged vibe of this. Sounds like it was recorded in a Central Ave. juke joint on a very hot Saturday night ... Very obscure; I've never come across another copy of this. See photos for track listing. Record: Fair to Good, light to moderate scuffs and surface marks on both sides, on purple Combo label, U.S. pressing.
