Here are two 12" one-sided acetates of Japan's JAPAN album as issued by Epic Records in the US. In NM- and NM---/EX condition, these have beautiful COLUMBIA RECORDING STUDIOS labels, and are dated 2/4/82. Super rarity for Japan and David Sylvian collectors. The first album for Virgin Records and their best seller in Japan, perhaps because Ryuichi Sakamoto appears. This is a perfect album in my opinion. "Swing" is probably my all time favourite Japan track.

The Japanese vinyl LP includes a gatefold lyric sheet with a large group photo. The UK LP was supposed to have an inner sleeve but it was scrapped due to the last minute decision to replace "Some Kind Of Fool" with "Burning Bridges". Xeroxed copies of one side of the inner sleeve were distributed to UK fan club members. You can see it here. Note how "Some Kind Of Fool" has been cut out and "Burning Bridges" pasted in it's place.????

The American (or most recent Japanese) CD is remastered and includes "The Width Of A Room" and "The Experience Of Swimming", which were originally on the UK "Polaroids" EP.

There are two unreleased songs still sitting in the vaults from the sessions for this album; "Some Kind Of Fool" (which Sylvian re-recorded the vocals for and released on "Everything & Nothing") plus "Angel In Furs", which was unfinished.

In addition to Sakamoto, there were four other people outside the group that contributed to the album; Simon House (violin - My New Career), Andrew Cauthery (oboe - Nightporter), Barry Guy (string bass - Nightporter) and Cyo (vocals - Methods Of Dance).

This disc has been bootlegged on numerous occasions, most commonly known as "Polaroid" or "Methods Of Dance". Ignore the sleeve of the latter - this show is definitely NOT from Hammersmith in 1980! The original vinyl disc pressed by BBC transcription services, catalogue number unknown. There are under 100 original copies in existence. Expect to pay ??200 plus for an original copy. A CD (or CDR) was also pressed by the BBC in 1992 for broadcast purposes and contains the following:

An essential purchase; another contender for "best album". Any YMO fans reading this will find it is a good companion to "Technodelic" and it is the most oriental sounding Japan album by far.?? "Still Life In Mobile Homes" still sounds amazing. Collectors should seek out an original UK vinyl copy which came with a fold-out poster.

The Japanese LP includes a lyric insert.

This album is a compilation of tracks from "Gentlemen Take Polaroids" and "Tin Drum" plus the single version of "Taking Islands In Africa". This has a unique cover with a photo of Sylvian's face on the front and a group photo on the back. The French cassette is probably a counterfeit/pirate issue but is more professionally produced than most. I saw several copies in French CD shops in the late 90's.
