~~~~~ 'Out of the Storm' was the debut album by drummer Ed Thigpen recorded in 1966, a year after he left the Oscar Peterson Trio, for the Verve label.
This was Ed Thigpen's first album as a leader.
It features a terrific lineup including: Ron Carter, Kenny Burrell, Herbie Hancock and Clark Terry. Clark Terry (trumpet & flugelhorn) plays w/ and w/out a mouthpiece, blowing quite freely and out there on two numbers.
Guitarist Kenny Burrell gets in a few good solos and is showcased on "Struttin' With Some Barbeque".
Bassist Ron Carter and pianist Herbie Hancock play great, as always, and make strong contributions to this session. ~~~~~ Drummer Ed Thigpen was a noted bebop drummer who is best known for his playing with Oscar Peterson and Billy Taylor.
Thigpen's style was in the Bop/Bebop style but he is noted for his brushwork, occasional use of 'tuned' drums and sensitive accompaniment.
Although he was born in Chicago and lived in L.A. and St. Louis, Thigpen, like many gifted jazz musicians of that era, found his way to New York City, where he soon was working with trumpeter Cootie Williams’ band at the Savoy. By the mid-50's he was completely immersed in the vibrant jazz scenes of 52nd Street and Harlem in New York City, playing with Bud Powell, Jutta Hipp, Oscar Pettiford, Charlie Rouse, Johnny Hodges and Billy Taylor.
Thigpen went to high school with, and was friends with, Dexter Gordon. He also occasionally played with Miles Davis at jam sessions in the lively St. Louis scene.
As a drummer who could play with intensity yet not overwhelm the soloists with volume, Thigpen was particularly in demand by both pianists and vocalists.
Oscar Peterson hired Thigpen for his trio in 1959. Thigpen recorded many classic albums with the Oscar Peterson Trio. That Peterson Trio, with Ray Brown on bass and Thigpen on drums, is one of the finest of Peterson’s career.
Thigpen's playing was so melodic, for a drummer, that Peterson hired him to replace his guitarist, Herb Ellis, who left to tour with Ella Fitzgerald.
Thigpen left Peterson’s trio in 1965 and then recorded this classic album as a leader.
Through the sixties, he remained active as a first-call drummer for various bebop bands.
He was Ella Fitzgerald’s drummer for a period in the late 60's. In 1972, he left for Copenhagen where he performed, wrote and taught. The Copenhagen Jazz scene was vibrant with musicians such as Thad Jones, Kenny Drew, and his old friend Dexter Gordon.
Thigpen passed away in 2010.
~~~~ Thigpen played and recorded with many of the top artists of his day. With a wide range of playing ability, he was an underrated master in his field. When one listens to Thigpen’s recordings one can easily hear how every tone, rhythm and accent on the drums is closely shaped in relation to the music.
~~~~~ ED THIGPEN 'OUT OF THE STORM'
CONDITION: Overall, a clean, crisp, pristine copy. I've been collecting records and Jazz vinyl a long time and can honestly say this is one of the better copies of this classic LP that I've ever seen.
First, I should point out that this LP is still in its 50+ year old shrink. The shrink has 'yellowed' slightly and is slightly 'dirty', making some of the pictures appear 'dirty' as well. The LP underneath is in very nice, clean condition with mild foxing on the back cover where the shrink edge was exposed. Also, the 'exposed' top right corner is slightly 'dinged' as well. See pics and details below.
I tried to give pictures with the shrink in place, then also pulled back slightly to show that the LP underneath is in very nice condition. Please see all the pictures for close-up details.
VINYL CONDITION: The vinyl is in beautiful condition. Stunning with hardly any evidence of play. Amazing condition and quality. Clean w/ bright sheen. No obvious flaws. You'll be very happy with it.
Labels: clean & crisp. Original Verve black w/ silver T logo. Some very slight wear on one side over the right arm of the 'T' logo. From pressing? These old black and silver Verve labels often had mild 'scuffing' to the silver ink printing right out of the jacket when new.
This has a "deep groove" slot on the label as well, although that may be the wrong term for Verve releases. Nice thick heavy vinyl.
Spindle hole looks crisp and sharp. No evidence of playing, no obvious spindle marks.
The matrix markings are clear and bold. It has the original 'Van Gelder' stamped into both sides.
JACKET CONDITION: As mentioned above, the cover is generally crisp and clean, protected by the shrink for over 55 years.
No BB Hole or Punch, like so many copies out there have.
This dark blue cover, featuring a stormy sea, was designed by Acy Lehman. Most 'used' copies of this have some ringwear, due to the thick Verve LP edges and the dark colors, but this one is crisp and clean.
There is some very mild foxing to the far left side of the rear cover where the shrink opening exposed the white back cover.
The top right corner has some mild creasing and wear due to being exposed from the shrink. Top left corner mildly 'bent' as well. Not bad, but should be pointed out. See Pics.
Some of what appears to be 'dirt' along the edges and corners is actually on the shrink, not the record. I gently pulled back the shrink in some of my photos to show the condition of the actual jacket underneath.
This record also comes with its original, period correct, Verve inner sleeve. New white paper sleeve also included.
It even still has a cool small old price tag, on the shrink, in the back top right.
Again, one of the better copies I've ever seen.
~~~~~ I got this from a collection here in Baltimore that I was allowed to 'Cherry Pick' a few months ago. It was very well maintained. I went there as he said he had some rare Billy Holiday, a Baltimore native and personal favorite, found some and found a few other jems, including this. I have a nice Japanese re-pressing of this album, so I'm letting this OG go to someone else.
~~~~~ I’m recently retired and downsizing and letting go of some gems and rarities from nearly 45 years of vinyl record collecting. Check out the many other fantastic 45s and 33s coming soon to my page!
All records have been carefully evaluated and graded by me. I visually inspect all records under bright light and personally clean them to get a true feel for condition. If still in doubt, i will play them on my modern high-end turntable to get an even more accurate feeling for condition. Most all my records are graded visually.
Please look at all the high-resolution pictures I added. They are all my own and are of the actual record being sold. The pictures are part of the description and can show small details, label variations, and condition better than I can put into words.
My grading is fair and honest and I will ALWAYS refund you for anything you’re not happy with. I have had over 3,200 happy and satisfied EBay customers over the years, with 100% positive feedback, and I have been buying/selling on EBay for well over 20 years, so please bid with confidence!
I'm a 0ne-man operation, this is a hobby, not my job. I do this for fun. I do this because I love music, love collecting vinyl and want others to share in that same experience. I take my time listening, researching, grading, listing and packaging. I will NOT sell any record that I personally would not want in my collection.
As you well know, packing and shipping rare records requires special care and attention, therefore, shipping cost within the lower 48 states is $5.00 on this item. If you would like insurance, or anything faster than Media/Economy Mail, please let me know and I can arrange it for you. I’ll work with you to make sure you’re happy!
I will gladly combine multiple records, or other items on my page, and make the shipping much less for you. I don’t inflate the shipping costs; they are what they are. I strive to keep them as low as possible. See my feedback for comments on my packing and shipping.
