Inside Ramsey Lewis (2 x LP/Gatefold)
This double LP is a best of compilation offering a selection of Ramsey Lewis' hand-clapping groovy piano playing and some more orchestral pieces from the late 60's.
An excellent collection of work by Ramsey – featuring his late Cadet sides, often arranged by Charles Stepney, and often featuring some sweeeeet electric piano and a nice touch of funk! The package includes many great numbers – such as "Ode", "Spanish Grease", "Cry Baby Cry", "Mi Compasion", "China Gate", "Do What You Wanna", "Uhuru", and "I'll Wait For You".
Jamento: The Monty Alexander 7 LP
Monty Alexander's Jamaican heritage is combined with his bop-oriented piano on this date to create some enjoyable music. This was his first recording to make use of a steel drummer (Vince Charles), and Alexander also uses an oversized rhythm section with Jamaican guitarist Ernest Ranglin, bassist Andy Simpkins, both Duffy Jackson and Roger Bethelmy on drums and percussionist Larry McDonald. The repertoire (which includes four Alexander originals and George Benson's poppish "Weekend In L.A.") is mostly obscure, but the interpretations are lively and full of spirit.
Quincy Jones - In Cold Blood LP
A trumpeter with the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band in the 50s, Jones started composing for films in the mid-60s, starting with The Pawnbroker in 1965 and famously for In The Heat Of The Night in 1967. Jazz historian Gary Giddins, who offers a wonderfully illuminating examination of legendary record producer Quincy Jones’s music for the film. In the clip above, Giddins discusses how Jones's menacing jazz score made fascinating use of bass lines—which were played by famed session musician Carol Kaye—and how these haunting musical cues set the psychological tone for the film.
Count Basie - Basic Basie LP
Basie had just returned from an 8-day trip to Argentina and Chile (the first time that the band had played in South America) when he took the band into the studio to record this album. He was specifically asked by the label to take more of the solo spotlight than normally, which he did to very good effect. But, as one would expect, there were other fine soloists on hand too, including tenormen Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Eric Dixon. The ensemble work is excellent (of course) and, since Freddie Green is here on guitar as usual, the rhythm section swings in true Basie fashion. The 12-tune programme comprises good standards. So, all the right ingredients were there and the souffle turned out just fine. The M Squad theme is a very groovy medium tempo blues, and As Long as I Live and I've Got the World on a String are also great reworkings of classic standards. The Count didn't record many albums during this period (the early seventies), so this really is a gem worth checking out.
Jan Schaffer - Blue Ridges and Red Waves LP
Rock Jazz
"Blue Bridges and Red Waves" is an album by prominent Swedish songwriter and producer, Jan Schaffer. He is one of Sweden's most respected electric guitarists and a member of ABBA. He performs both as a soloist and guitarist for ABBA, other artists, and appears on approximately 5,000 recordings. During his career, he has also played for Toto and Bob Marley.

Gramavision is a US record label founded in 1979, known for its exploration of jazz, funk, and avant-garde 20th-century compositions. The Masters From Gramavision compilation LP Sampler One, released in 1983, is a great mix of jazz, rock, and avant-garde jazz selections. It's described as a great addition to any music collection, particularly for those who appreciate the genre. The LP features a collection of tracks from various Gramavision artists.
Spyro Gyra ~ Self Titled LP
This is simply a great album. It has a wonderful collection of music from this great jazz "Power-House". They are known predominantly as a jazz-fusion band combining elements of jazz with R&B, funk and pop.
Grover Washington, Jr. - Come Morning LP
One of the most popular saxophonists of all time, Grover Washington, Jr. was long the pacesetter in his field. Taken away from us too soon in 1999 at the young age of 56 his fantastic music is his legacy. "Come Morning" was the excellent follow-up to "Winelight" and is a must-have if you're a GW Jr fan. The same stable of great session guys from the "Winelight" album are back. Grover doin' it as only he could. This 1981 album, features some fantastic tracks "East River Drive", "Come Morning" "Reaching Out" "Making Love to You" and "I'm all Yours". Others may prefer ‘Little Black Samba’ or the great version of Marley's "Jamming". Smooth, chilling sophisticated music. Love It!

Best Of Lambert, Hendricks & Ross LP
"The Best of Lambert, Hendricks & Ross" is a highly acclaimed compilation that showcases the trio's pioneering work in jazz vocals and vocalese. It's praised for its innovative harmonies, witty lyrics, and the group's ability to make jazz vocals sound both modern and timeless. While some find certain tracks a bit dated, the album's impact on the genre and its most famous songs remain highly relevant.Tim Weisburg - Hurtwood Edge LPThis is Tim Weisberg's second Album for A&M records and it picks up where his first lp left off. Some of the best songs are Burlington Skyway. Summers past. Maat. Ojai. And Song for Lisa. A Great and Essential part of the Weisberg discography. Sadly like many of his releases "Hurtwood Edge" has been long out of print and Has Never Been Reissued on CD nor has it been Released as a digital download. I Hope that sometime in the future that A&M and its current owners will eventually rerelease this as well as all of Weisberg's A&M albums. Especially for fans of this particular kind of Jazz/Rock fusion of the 70s.

Al Hirt – Unforgettable LP
Jumbo (aka Al Hirt) was a popular trumpeter of the '60s. His commercial peak was 1963-65 just prior to Herb's 1965-68 run. Jumbo was unique in that he was a trumpet virtuoso with an obvious command of the instrument essentially unparalleled in the "non-classical" world (other '60s virtuosi that come to mind are Booker Little, and perhaps Doc Severinsen and Clark Terry). While there is much to admire with Al's playing, for me it was his dead-center, rock-solid tone: aside from Booker Little, no other trumpeter truly moved me with such amazing tone as Jumbo.
Al Hirt – Swingin' Dixie! (At Dan's Pier 600 In New Orleans) Volume One LP
Jumbo (aka Al Hirt) was a master of Dixieland Jazz and a powerful horn player. What makes this early recording -cut and pressed by the legendary Audio Fidelity- really special is the fact of presenting a gorgeous stereo sound, plenty of tonal subtlety, with a broad dynamic range and, in addition to that, an excellent two-channelled imaging. In short: this is a recording which will delight the listener whether he is fond of jazzy albums or just a passionate of flawless, crystal-clear recordings.
Al Hirt – Swingin' Dixie! (At Dan's Pier 600 In New Orleans) Volume Two LP
Jumbo (aka Al Hirt) was unique in that he was a trumpet virtuoso with an obvious command of the instrument essentially unparalleled in the "non-classical" world. While there is much to admire with Al's playing, for me it was his dead-center, rock-solid tone: aside from Booker Little, no other trumpeter truly moved me with such a great tone as Jumbo. Excellent recording. Straight ahead Dixieland with Al Hirt's saucy trumpet leading the way. Great solos and early stereo presence.

Parke Frankenfield – Plays Swingin' Dixie LP
Trombone was his main instrument. He played the piano, organ, vibes, trumpet, trombone, saxophone, clarinet, flute, drums, flugelhorn and alto horn before retiring 1985. Following his move to Florida, he hosted a popular radio show, WOSN-97.1 FM. He was the leader of the Parke Frankenfield Band and the Dixieland All-Stars.
Boots Randolph - The Sound of Boots LP
Boots Randolph's cover of "Gentle On My Mind," set opener on THE SOUND OF BOOTS (SLP 18099), his ninth solo MONUMENT Records album (rel. 7/68), was his most successful single, peaking at #19 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart.
In 1963, Boots reached #35 on Billboard's Hot 100 (#29 R&B) with "Yakety Sax." He was also featured on Al Hirt's "Java" and played on many Elvis Presley tracks, such as "Return to Sender."
Liner notes are by Boudleaux Bryant, co-writer with wife Felice of many Everly Brothers hits, plus "Raining in My Heart" for Buddy Holly. The name of Boudleaux's secretary, Bobby McKee was the inspiration for Kris Kristofferson's "Me and Bobby McGee."
Larry Elgart and His Hooked On Swing Orchestra LP
Medleys of Classic Songs: The album features medleys of popular swing and other genres, including jazz, Broadway, and love songs.
Includes Iconic Tunes: The medleys encompass famous songs such as "In The Mood," "New York, New York," and "Chattanooga Choo Choo".
Released in 1982: The Hooked on Swing album by Larry Elgart (credited as Larry Elgart and His Manhattan Swing Orchestra) was produced for K-tel International and released by RCA Records in 1982. This record was certified platinum.
Mark O'Connor - Elysian Forest
With its complex and varied tunes - including great fiddle playing - this album serves as cheerful background music for anything you are doing. There are no lyrics to interrupt my thoughts, only great musicians playing at their best. Patterned after the caprices of the great 19th century violinist Nicolo Paganini, this piece begins with a traditional style fiddling pattern but soon evolves into a virtuosic piece featuring lightning fast bowing and arpeggios. The first time I heard it it took my breath away. I realized that this guy had musical depth far beyond other fiddlers.
Peter Appleyard Presents / White Vinyl LP
This could possibly the best sounding record ever. Yes, the record 48 years old but sonically it's incredible. The album is outstanding, A jazz/funk classic!
Herbie Mann - Big Boss Mann LP
split seam
An excellent album of Latin material from Herbie Mann -- and proof that he's equally great in just about any setting! The album's a rare Columbia Records outing from Herbie -- but it's easily one of his greatest of the 70s, thanks to some really smoking arrangements from Oliver Nelson -- plus an all-star cast of players that includes Carmell Jones, Dave Pike, Jimmy Heath, Patato Valdez, Willie Bobo, Charlie Palmieri, and a young Chick Corea! Tracks are short, tight, and very rhythmic -- grooving in a snapping approach to Latin that's filled with plenty of soul, but which also features plenty of jazzy touches as well. A few tunes here are familiar, but they're given wonderful new treatment by Herbie and Nelson -- and the record easily beats most Verve or Impulse sessions of this type at their own game! Tracks include "Bijou", "Ave Maria Morena", "Watermelon Man", "Interlude", "Let's Boom Chitty Boom", "Senor Blues", "Jungle Fantasy", and "Jive Samba". (Also issued under the title Latin Mann).
Basia - Time and Tide LP
Time And Tide marked a fresh start for Basia Trzetrzelewska and Danny White, two-thirds of pop-jazzers Matt Bianco. The first and best of three albums the pair released under the Basia moniker before Basia herself took a long-term hiatus from music, it encompasses cool jazz and Latin grooves.
Antonio Carlos Jobim - A Certain Mr. Jobim LP
A Certain Mr. Jobim is the fourth album by Antônio Carlos Jobim. It was released in 1967
and was number 14 on the US Jazz Albums 1968 year-end chart. Jobim is one of the bosses
of the bossa nova - His music represents some of the crème of the crop of classical music.
Many people don't understand his music but if they keep listening... they will get it.
Frank Chacksfield And His Orchestra – Rise LP
part of their "Globetrotting" series, is a pleasant, easy listening jazz album with a focus on romantic and dreamlike textures. While some might find the arrangements overly romantic or even cheesy, others appreciate the lush string sounds and overall gorgeous orchestration, especially those with an appreciation for vintage recording techniques.
Ronnie Aldrich
& His Pianos And Orchestra – Evergreen LP
Ronnie Aldrich was a renowned British pianist known for his distinctive "two pianos" concept in his music, often utilizing overdubbing to create a richer sound. He primarily recorded for the Decca Records label, and its US counterpart London Records, throughout the 1960s and 70s
Ronnie Aldrich And His Two Pianos w/ The London Festival Orchestra –
This Way 'In' LP
This Way 'In' LP was a new concept at the time. Ronnie Aldrich And His Two Pianos With The London Festival Orchestra - This Way "In" - utilizes overdubbing to create a richer sound.
Art Tatum – Piano St arts Here LP
The piano playing here is brilliant, spontaneous, and energetic. There is a reproduction of this recording done by Zenph that uses computer technology to translate the original recording into a program that then plays through an actual piano. This recording sounds perfect. You can hear the dynamic quality of Art's playing.Silver Linings (Songs By Jerome Kern) LP
This is a classic album from 1985 that deserves to remain in print forever. Their performances are perfection - no showing off, no distortions of the melody or accompaniment, just pure musical heaven, like every record of theirs I own. This album brings you as close to Kern's intentions as you will probably ever get.Peggy Lee – Sylvania Presents...The Sounds Of The Seventies LP
The Sounds Of The Seventies was released twice, first as an exclusive promotional LP commissioned by Sylvania, and later as a LP and 8-track cartridge and cassette tape. The original LP was issued under the label's Creative Products logo, while this was released by Capitol Special Markets. This premium album was originally available only through electronics stores that carried Sylvania products during the second half of 1970. At that point, the album was actually part of The Peggy Lee Collectors' Album And Art Portfolio.price rating
