BLISTERING ALL instrumental album from the master of his craft. For me, this album is the pinnacle of his early period. The tracks are all very symphatic to instrumental treatment and his lead playing is utterly evocative providing the perfect substitute for the absense of vocals. Surrounded by incredible players incluidng keyboardist Max Middleton (from the Jeff Beck Group), drummer Richard Bailey and bassist Phil Chen the music is uncluttered but hugely expressive. Sure, many have classified the style as jazz fusion but the rock element is always at the forground pushing and pulling where it matters most.
Songwise there are some interesting covers including 'Cause We've Ended As Lovers' and 'Thelonius' both written by Stevie Wonder, 'Diamond Dust' by Bernie Holland and the Beatles classic 'She's A Woman'. Of course, the best track is undoubtably 'Freeway Jam', a blistering all out heavy jazz rock masterpiece with screaming guitar and big ballsy bass. 'Wired' his follow up album released in 1976 attempted to recreate and extend the same ground but, in my view, artistically didn't quite reach the same levels of excellence. 'Blow By Blow' remains an all time classic and a highpoint in Becks not inconsiderable arsenal.
This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
Pressing: Epic, UK, 1975 - Original yellow label
Vinyl: clean and shiny condition. No spindle marks and no other signs of any use. Previous owner's sticker on side two - see photo. Grades as shop fresh MINT!
Cover: Again no signs of use. Sharp corners, no dings, no bends, no ring wear, no split seams and no creases. Spine is stiff, square and totally uncrushed. Impossible to find like this after 43 years. Grades as shop fresh MINT!
