Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with any spindle marks ultra fine and faint and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: LSP 4459.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 136 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: UK pressings are moderately scarce. This is an early pressed German example which is significant for the serious JA collector as the cover is very different. The artwork here is protected by laminate on both sides, nothing like the UK version which was unlaminated and textured. Visually a major variant and looking lovely. The track listing is the same and the pressing quality is superb, being German, what else would you expect? This is only one I have ever seen and the laminate gives this cover a real luxury look and feel.

Brief Info: For me, one of the greatest compilations ever made, everything from the album title to the cover artwork and the stunning track list – even if you own all the pre-1970 classic albums, this is essential as well. I was introduced to this band from way back in my early teen years when I bought a copy of this album – compilations initially purchased on a limited budget at the time – I immediately knew I had discovered a very special band and they have ever since been one of my favourite groups ever – up to 1969 anyway. Grace Slick, arguably the greatest female rock vocalist ever and this includes my favourite single of all time in the stunning ‘White Rabbit’. How can a song so short be so wonderful?, the best acid-psych trip in under three minutes you will ever hear. But every song on this sublime compilation is terrific, from the opening pair that feature the original vocalist, Signe Anderson to the revolutionary ‘Volunteers’ the closes this ultimate collection. Also featured is the beautiful ‘Martha’, the haunting Balin and Kantner gem ‘Today’ and the Slick pair ‘Somebody to Love’ and the disturbing ‘Lather’. For those still to discover arguably the most daring and best American act of the late 60s, there is no better place to start. But I would be sure, this would soon be followed by others, this beautifully pressed and presented German-made diamond is almost too good for words.

Cover Grade and Format: A highly attractive EX. A single, fully laminated format which is a major cover variant for this quite famous cover. Printed and made in Germany.

Lamination – Front & Back: There are few laminate issues on this lovely looking cover. The most apparent is a crease on the lower back near the right corner area but this is only around moderate or less with modest visibility. A few other small or semi-creases only and all is fully adhered with no blisters or peeling. It retains a lovely shine and clarity with any dulling or friction rubs very mild and light. The wood-like artwork has an almost French-polished look with the lovely shiny laminate atop and this is another example of German lamination that really brings out the loveliness of the cover.

Top Edge: Corner chip to right, that apart, as made.

Bottom Edge: Practically the same again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering, no trimming either. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Barely any traces of weara but the laminate has slightly lifted away, only very gently so making for traces of opaqueness. Solid, straight, uncompressed and square, all text is unworn.

Corners: The spine pair almost as made with superb shape. The right pair have chipped on the tips.

Cover Summary: A very strong and attractive variation on what is considered normal. This is the only laminated ‘Worst Off’, I have seen. A very nice all round example and one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner: The plain white unlined inner is included in very fine condition. It has a sticker on it with 84 written.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX++ to Mint(-), a superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with just mere traces of ultra fine surface marks. No more than whispy mega-fine hairlines under light that of course have no effect on play. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful, quality German pressing plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is as good as it gets from this record. JA were never super-fi recordings being honest but sounded just right for their vintage. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
