Oh YEAH, this one's a MONSTER! No disrespect to the Bohemian Vendetta, but THIS might be the BEST garage punk psych album released on the beloved Mainstream label in the 60's. This is the self-titled album by the Jelly Bean Bandits, from 1967. Normally I'd list a couple highlights from the album, but darned if ALL the songs aren't highlights. Take any one of 'em - "Country Woman" - a KILLER punky psych cut with the accent on psych. Great rumbling bass, echoed out acid fuzz guitar licks and some WILD slashing guitar. Next. "Generation" - an all-time punk psych Mayhem and Psychosis CLASSIC, here in all its glorious stereo sound. "Look to the skies, the flying saucers have always been there!" goes the now-famous introduction, and from that point on, it's pure demented acid psych, with that wondrous staccato shudder guitar chord after each line in the chorus. It's basically a tripped-out version of "Country Woman", with slightly faster tempo, snottier vocals, and loaded with distortion and feedback. In other words, a friggin' MASTERPIECE. Next track - "Poor Precious Dreams" - yet another killer slab o' punk psych, this time set to a runaway train rhythm, clattering at a breakneck speed and ready to derail at any minute. "Carry home your fears in pink paper boxes, and let your soul survive IF YOU CAN!" Next..."Happiness Girl" is a brief respite from the teen angst, a superb homage to '65-66 Byrds and Beatles - great jangly teenage garage beat like something off Rubber Soul or Revolver, with some cool teen roller rink organ and really freakish occasional Looney Tunes sound effects, the conk-on-the-head type where Bugs hits someone over the head with a big oversized mallet. "Neon River" is another Nuggets garage psych MONSTER, a big booming echoed-out psych tripper with soaring acid guitar, angry sneering punky vocals, and more tympani than a Wagnerian opera. Any one of these songs, "Neon River" and "Generation" especially, would have been perfectly at home on Lenny Kaye's Nuggets, and actually might've put most of the other tracks to shame. Finally, mention should be made of the Bandits' complete and total early Pink Floyd freakout, "Plastic Soldiers", a slow psychedelic burner with classic meandering Rick Wright organ, wildly distorted vocals, and mind-blowing or head-scratching (depending on your level of sobriety) lyrics like these: "The world is wrapped with leaves, and the universe beyond is cellophane. The faces in the window are voting to come in out of the rain. Radishes aren't always red, and the Jack of Knaves may lose his head on that...and all that matters in the sky is written in a caterpillar's eye!" Doubtless someone's been copping a few hits off said caterpillar's hookah pipe too. An absolute psych punk MASTERPIECE - I've already said it but I'll say it again - and if you can't feed your head off this one, then do us all a favor and pick up a few Kenny G CDs at your local Sam Goody and don't ever talk about music to anyone again. Cover's in EXCELLENT shape, vinyl plays EXCELLENT too - this has been in my hands since the 70s and I've kept it well protected and preserved.
