ALIVE & ROCKIN'(1973/1979)

Released in the 1980s,this LP contains some of Jerry Lee's most fascinating tracks.We have unreleased recordings from the session for 1973s 'Session' album. The excellent blues jam 'Somehow the Killer comes through' from 1973 opens the album well & is one of the best of these 'Session' outtakes.The air is similar to 'Jukebox' & the lyrics deal with Jerry Lee's hard times & his 'coming through' them.It eventually becomes 'Jukebox' about 3/4s way through.An instrumental of 'Early morning rain' & an alternate 'Bad moon rising' also feature from these 1973 sessions as well as another excellent 'new' song:'I wanna hear that piano again',where JLL tells the story of he turning on the radio before his show & hearing this pianist who he greatly admires.He writes to the DJ for his name & is told it is JERRY LEE LEWIS from 1956!!Really cool stuff.

Excellent live versions of 'Little queenie','I am what I am' & 'Whole lotta shakin' also turn up.A Jerry Lee only 'Big train to Memphis' closes the album & is a big highlight.It is far superior to the 'Class of '55' version. Also on the album is a rare unreleased 1979 Elektra session.'Tossin' & turnin'','I ain't loved you' & 'Oldtime rock 'n' roll' all are reminders why Jerry Lee Lewis is the real King of rock 'n' roll & are as good as anything on the first Elektra album.

Perhaps the real highlight of this album,though,is the remaining 1979 track, 'Milk cow blues'.The song is an old blues standard originally by James 'Kokomo' Arnold in 1935.Arnold based it on Sleepy John Estes' 1930 version which doesn't even mention a 'Milk cow'.It became a blues standard by the late 1930s after Arnold hit big with it.It was covered by Delta bluesmen Big Joe Williams & Robert Johnson.Western swinger Bob Wills also recorded it & several more Western swing artists followed.The idea in this song is that the singer depicts his girl as a 'Milk cow' & her love as the 'Milk cow's' produce.It became a rock 'n' roll standard in the 1950s.However,Jerry Lee plays it as a straight gutbucket blues like he did on Sun's 'Hello,hello baby' or 'Big legged woman'.He learned it at Haney's big house.This is one of the Killer's most amazing performance & really would have been a big bonus on any of the Elektra albums.
