ORIGINAL UK MCA (MKPS 2011/12) SECOND PRESSING (1972) OF THE 1970 PREMIER RECORDING OF JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR: A ROCK OPERA - WITH DEEP PURPLE'S IAN GILLAN TAKING ON THE TITLE ROLE
THIS COPY IS IN PRISTINE CONDITION - IT APPEARS TO HAVE NEVER BEEN PLAYED AND THE AUDIO DELIVERY IS EXCEPTIONALLY CLEAN, BRIGHT AND FRESH THROUGHOUT WITH NOTHING TO FAULT - IT SOUNDS SENSATIONAL WITH AN INCREDIBLE IMMEDIACY ONLY EVER FOUND ON VINYL - NOT SURPRISING AS THE SET WAS CUT BY DECCA WHO PRODUCED SOME OF THE FINEST SOUNDING RECORDS OF THE PERIOD
This original recording (released before the show was ever staged) has a rock flavour that is very different from Webber's later work.
This is due in part to the emotive singing of Murray Head and Ian Gillan and the playing of well-known rock session musicians such as guitarists Neil Hubbard and Chris Spedding, bassist Alan Spenner and drummer Bruce Rowland.
The musical arrangements are often multi-layered (with synthesisers and effects), featuring rock and classical elements, and contain many abruptly shifting dynamics and progressive time signatures.
In many ways this is the definitive version of the work

* BOTH RECORDS ARE PRESSED BY DECCA ON QUALITY HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL WHICH DELIVER THE SENSATIONAL LOUD, BRIGHT, RICH AND WARM AUDIO
* THESE SMALL 1972 MCA LABELS HAVE A CENTRAL BLUE BAR WITH A HEXAGON SHAPE TO THE CENTRE AND WERE ONLY USED FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME BEFORE THE SOLID BLACK AND LATER 'RAINBOW' DESIGN
* MATRICES: 7 - 214 - 2 / 7 - 215 (record one) & 7 - 216 - 2 / 7 - 217 (record two) - IDENTICAL MARTIX NUMBERS TO THE FIRST OCTOBER 1970 PRESSING
* 1 / 1 / 1 / 1 MOTHER NUMBERS ON ALL FOUR SIDES (with etched 'JT' tax code etched in the 6 o'clock position - on all four sides)
* GATEFOLD SLEEVE "Printed in England by Robert Stace" (there were a number of variations for this sleeve - the fully matt variant being the most common but there is also a limited outer laminated version and an extremely rare fold-out star shaped sleeve)
* A LARGE FORMAT 12 PAGE BOOKLET WITH PHOTOS AND LYRICS - DATED OCTOBER 1970
* TWO ORIGINAL DECCA BLUE STEREO POLY-LINED INNER SLEEVES - THESE ARE BOTH IDENTICALLY DATED '2-72'

LABELS: The labels are just as they were in 1972 - clean, bright and unmarked with no spindle traces or any signs of use at all - MINT
VINYL Visual: All four vinyl surfaces retain their original deep, like-new glossy sheen and are completely unmarked (not even any wispy hairlines visible under a bright light) - in my opinion, unplayed - MINT
VINYL Audio: Outstanding audio delivery in every respect - crystal clear, deep, rich and vibrant - sounds absolutely stunning. On playback at a loud volume (and it's always a real pleasure to return to this wonderful LP) there are no audio issues - no scratches, no sticks/jumps, no clicks/pops and no surface noise - this is a beautifully clean pressing and an incredibly impressive recording - beautifully engineered by Decca (who produced some of the finest sounding records of the period). Critically graded MINT for audio and very highly recommended indeed
SLEEVE: The matt gatefold cover is in EXCELLENT condition. The colours are fresh and vibrant with just some ring and record impression on the back (please see photos), but a nice fresh front and the inside is clean and unmarked. The edges and spine are crisp and square with no real wear to speak of - all spine text is clear and bold. Overall, a fine example of the incredibly easily worn untreated sleeve
BOOKLET: The original large format 12 page booklet - dated October 1970, "Printed in England by Moore & Matthes Ltd.” - is in strictly graded EXCELLENT(-) as all pages are present and clean but there is a small biro scribble on the front (please see close up photo) and signs of the booklet being 'thumbed' through otherwise, a fine example
DECCA INNERS: Both of the original Blue Stereo Decca inners (dated February 1972) are basically untouched with no splits - NEAR MINT
