Description

ONEADAYRECORDS – Simply Delivering Quality Music to the World in Quality, Safe Packing.

Postage: UK £4.75 (£1 per extra record). Europe (including Russia) £12.50 (£2 per extra record). Rest of World (including ALL parts of the USA) £16.50 (£3 per extra record). All boxes signed for in quality, safe packaging – I NEVER use mailing envelopes that offer virtually no protection at all, and records WILL arrive damaged in them at some time as most record buyers will already know. Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. PLEASE NOTE: I will NOT send any item, no matter what its value without a Royal Mail or courier tracking number. ALL my items must be signed and trackable to comply with Ebay delivery rules. Please do NOT ask me to make any exceptions to this rule as no country offers 100% reliable service without it.

Posting to Russia: Yes, I do post to Russia. But delivery can take longer from the UK. So please be patient. I will submit a tracking number to the winning bidder, and when the packet arrives there it can be followed online using the Russian post website.

ALSO: I now apply the Ebay ‘2-day’ rule for non-payment to keep things moving – cash-flow is important for any small business.

ANY ITEM or ITEMS TO BE PAID WITHIN A MAXIMUM OF 6 DAYS or they will be cancelled – NO EXCEPTIONS.

FINALLY: Late payers, non-payers and ‘0’ bidders will now be blocked or cancelled at my discretion, as will any bidder who cancels a bid. Please only bid on my items if you want them.

Artist or Band: JETHRO TULL

Album Title: Stand Up

Producer(s): Terry Ellis & Ian Anderson

TRACK LIST:

Side 1: A New Day Yesterday; Jeffrey Goes to Leicester Square; Bourée; Back to the Family; Look Into the Sun.

Side 2: Nothing is Easy; Fat Man; We Used to Know; Reasons for Waiting; For a Thousand Mothers.

Label/Format: Island, with the first orange eye logo and Chrysalis logo credit to correctly match the cover. This the rarest pressing of this album with the palest labels. So pale in fact, they almost appear as off-white with merest hint of faint pink. A super-rare variant that is rarely ever seen and possibly the first ever pressed by Pye with the first punched matrixes. These have the distinct ring ridges with rough textured surfaces. The colour of this label virtually matches the photographs as seen on my computer screen. One I have never seen before, and it does not even feature in the superb Juri Grishin ‘Island Records’ book. The only similar one in his book is ‘Kip of Serines’ by Dr Strangely Strange, which is described as the rarest label. Very few of these would have been made – indeed, was it an error? This famed label is usually a deep pink – this one is about the palest pink you will ever see, and totally naturally so. A truly beautiful pair of labels on one of the greatest albums to adorn the Island label.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and hugely attractive with only a modest few fine and light spindle marks. This is a top-quality pressing with a lovely pop-up cover and sound.

Catalogue Number: ILPS 9103

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 176 grams. Not only does this have one of the rarest ever Island label variant, this also one of the heaviest Island records I have held.

Country of Manufacture: England

Rarity: This album rightly proved successful and was pressed on many different label formats, mostly on various pink Island designs from the this first pink eyeball label to the pink rims and beyond. The orange eyeball logo originals were only available relatively briefly before the second black block variant, then on to the pink i format. To date, this is the very first first pressing I have seen with the ultra pale pink labels that come close to being an off-white. Certainly one for Island label specialist collectors as few will ever be seen or offered.

Original Year of Release: 1969

Matrix Nos: ILPS + 9103 + A / ILPS + 9103 + B [these are deeply machine punched, large and very clear]

Musicians: Ian Anderson – flute, acoustic guitar, Hammond organ, piano, mandolin, balalaika, mouth organ and vocals; Glen Cornick – bass guitar; Clive Bunker – drums, percussion; Martin Lancelot Barre – electric guitar, flute.

Brief Info: Within the genre of ‘classic’ rock, there are few better albums than this second Jethro Tull set. Everything about this album is perfect – great songs, sublime packaging, fantastic sound and performance – no collection should not include a copy of ‘Stand Up’. Following the brilliant debut album, Mick Abrahams departed for form Blodwyn Pig, this was never going to be easy, but the band rose to even greater heights. Beautifully packaged with it’s ‘working’ pop-up woodcut design cover, the details on the front are little short of remarkable as I hope my pictures show. Musically, for me anyway, this is Jethro Tull’s best ever album, not a second of wasted time, every track is sublime and beautifully recorded too. Blending heavy and mellow songs with gorgeous instrumentation including strings, the details hidden within these vintage grooves are never-ending. This superb massively pressed first issue with its very rare label variant colour, may have a few light surface marks, but plays superbly with little unwanted. Beautifully recorded with superb sound quality that has little unwanted. The few light marks mostly ignored with even the quieter songs sounding impressive. The odd sporadic tick near impossible to avoid on a record now well into its fiftieth year.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): an unlaminated gatefold format with the original ‘pop-up’ cut-out feature inside (this detail part beautiful and little short of as made). The surfaces are matt and smooth, the front with the beautiful quite deep yellow hue that really brings out the details of the woodcut graphic. Printed and made in England, uncredited with the ILPS 9103 catalogue number and Chrysalis logo. Includes the polylined Pye-style early inner sleeve.

Cover Front: The beautiful woodcut and incredibly detailed graphic looks hugely fresh and impressive with barely anything to fault bar the odd tiny corner rub, and how many will avoid that as the barest minimum? The lack of light fading, rubbing and creasing is always the best news on such a classic piece of rock art. Any blemishes tiny and faint, this has the lovely yellow hue which really makes the black detail stand out, there are no sticker issues. One that does it maximum justice.

Cover Back: An uncompromising back that usually suffers often heavy grubbiness or ring wear. This is, as-seen, superb with little to fault and barely aged at all. Any trace of discolouration to the predominately white surface minimal near the left edge. Barely creased with any marks or blemishes minuscule. To date, this has to be the very best back I have seen on this vintage cover, it will seldom be seen better or matched.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Simply superb, little short of immaculate. The pop-up feature is pristine, it folds up and down perfectly and is crisp, uncreased or thickened. The securing white flaps unloosened and neat. This fragile working part will seldom be seen better on this original cover, it has never come unstuck or been ‘repaired’, hopefully my pictures will do the talking.

Top Edges: Very straight, flat, flush and quite close to parallel, the surfaces have barely any wear up to the right front tip that has a very small rub.

Bottom Edges: Largely the same with just a microscopic surface chip on the back.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The cut front is clean and straight and hardly thickened. The back open storage edges are very crisp and hardly thickened. All are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: A brilliant spine which is quite wide and very solid. Straight with barely any compression or tilt. The surface clean and fresh with all text fully present, strong and unrubbed as-seen. Again one of the very best I have seen, the lack of grubbiness or darkening to its surface is rarely found.

Corners: Any rub traces small and light, the spine pair especially are very impressive. Excellent or better shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: One or rock’s greatest ever covers – for me anyway – this is pure class, and the pop-up has an almost iconic status. This feature part is totally pristine both sides and works to perfection. This is one collectors want in really great condition, but so very hard to find like this. This a beauty, and with so little wear it should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): the polylined inner sleeve has two very neat edge folds, these often deliberate to stop the record sliding out. Both circles crisp and neat, one tiny nick was repaired by myself to stop it catching and tearing, it hardly registers. The lining still clear and fresh, the paper with minimal hint of discolouration, so aged little at all. All edges unsplit with no repairs on any. This is UK patented with 1,072,844 number detail, also ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: or thereabouts (and I feel this is being quite critical). A very thick and heavyweight record, and even by Pye pressing standards at this time, 176 grams is a massive weight for any standard issue record. There are four fine lines, non-feelable and ignored, any other surface marks are fine, wispy and faint as seen under bright light. Wide and deep grooves on a record means it is more resilient to minor surface marks, especially if played with a super-fine tipped stylus that gets deep into the grooves for maximum information and quality play-back. It plays very impressively and was a joy to play-grade, or I would not offer it of course. The record very clean with lovely shine and most evidence suggests, it has been only quite lightly played. For those who are not worried by a few mild surface blemishes, but more interested in the quality of the sound and music, it should please many, if not most collectors. Few originals will have fewer these days and for a record that has a reputation for variable pressing quality, this one has little unwanted.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: I always relish the opportunity to play a first issue copy of this rock masterpiece, and it failed to disappoint. This classic album plays above its very fine visual grading with little to fault. It offers strong audio with a lovely detailed production and the genuine full-on sound the original seem to offer best. Sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range – a real hi-fi recording and still is a pleasure to listen too. Any surface sounds or blemishes few and light with effortless tracking*, this deep groove, almost amazingly heavy record proved very enjoyable for me. The early Jethro Tull line-up were truly inspired on this set and clearly the band themselves were delighted with it, as stated on the cover. Beautifully recorded and produced with incredible instrumentation and Anderson rarely sounding better. This rare and unusual Island label first issue variant could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended – a very rare opportunity for fans and label collectors – this will rarely be seen.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

I am one of the most established sellers on Ebay, trading since 2001 and offering the finest records I can find. I pride myself on offering a variety of genres to keep my site as interesting as possible. I will rarely offer any record that falls below a true Excellent grading, unless its of a certain rarity which will justify offering a lesser grade. I try, to the best of my ability to describe as accurately and as honesty all elements of the items I offer for sale. You may notice I only submit records quite sparingly on Ebay as I Play-Grade every record I offer in their entirety – also on higher-end equipment – not just bits to guess a grade – visuals alone do not always tell a true story. I will try to mention any defects or flaws no matter how small that I notice to be fair as possible to any interested collector – I am very fussy and my buyers have the right to be too. Every record I offer, whether it be a common or rare item deserves the same respect as far as I am concerned and will be treated the same – just because an item is rare does not always mean it’s good. I get just as much pleasure offering a relatively common record in near mint condition as the real rare items. All the pictures I use for your guidance are the item being offered with no digital enhancements. Room light factors can make things vary sometimes, that is hard to control, especially in winter. I hope the item below is to your liking – any questions can be emailed and I will do my best to answer you. I am enthusiastic, and have a fair degree of knowledge about many genres and I promise quality items. Please assume all records I offer have NO jumps, sticks, major warps or writing on covers or labels unless clearly stated to the contrary. Thanks for your interest and Good luck – MIKE.

Equipment Used for Play-Grading: I now play-grade ALL the records I offer (unless clearly stated to the contrary) on the following equipment:

Deck: Linn LP12/Hercules/Cirkus with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge (tracks at 2 grams). Amps: Naim Supernait 2 with Project USB phono stage and Tellerium Black interconnects. Speakers: B&W 805 Nautilus (bi-wired with Tellurium Black terminated cable) with REL subwoofer. All records I offer on Ebay are cleaned on a professional Nessie vacuum machine before play-grading for the cleanest and best possible sound and will include a brand new lined inner and protective cover too. Pictures taken with a Nikon D7500 DSLR Camera.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
