PREMESSA: LA SUPERIORITA' DELLA MUSICA SU VINILE E' ANCOR OGGI SANCITA, NOTORIA ED EVIDENTE. NON TANTO DA UN PUNTO DI VISTA DI RESA, QUALITA' E PULIZIA DEL SUONO, TANTOMENO DA QUELLO DEL RIMPIANTO RETROSPETTIVO E NOSTALGICO , MA SOPRATTUTTO DA QUELLO PIU' PALPABILE ED INOPPUGNABILE DELL' ESSENZA, DELL' ANIMA E DELLA SUBLIMAZIONE CREATIVA. IL DISCO IN VINILE HA PULSAZIONE ARTISTICA, PASSIONE ARMONICA E SPLENDORE GRAFICO , E' PIACEVOLE DA OSSERVARE E DA TENERE IN MANO, RISPLENDE, PROFUMA E VIBRA DI VITA, DI EMOZIONE E DI SENSIBILITA'. E' TUTTO QUELLO CHE NON E' E NON POTRA' MAI ESSERE IL CD, CHE AL CONTRARIO E' SOLO UN OGGETTO MERAMENTE COMMERCIALE, POVERO, ARIDO, CINICO, STERILE ED ORWELLIANO, UNA DEGENERAZIONE INDUSTRIALE SCHIZOFRENICA E NECROFILA, LA DESOLANTE SOLUZIONE FINALE DELL' AVIDITA' DEL MERCATO E DELL' ARROGANZA DEI DISCOGRAFICI .

The truth of the matter is that Jim Capaldi never was just the drummer in Traffic; he and Winwood together were responsible for such Traffic numbers as "Forty Thousand Headmen," "Paper Sun," "Dealer," "Empty Pages," in fact, the greater part of Traffic's output since the days of the Berkshire poppies. And Oh How We Danced is not so much a solo effort as a re-alignment of the Traffic chain of creation; Capaldi's studio band consisted of various combinations of Winwood, Wood, Mason, Kwaku Bah, Dave Hood and Roger Hawkins (the most recent Traffic rhythm section), and sundry other musicians from the Muscle Shoals and Island studio rosters, horns and all.
As the title implies, Capaldi's album has more than a touch of the good-times-had, hard-road-traveled, been - there - and - back, seen-it-all lyrical theme, counterbalanced by affirmations. It's been a long road from "Heaven is in Your Mind." "All You Need Is Love" has given way to "Love Is All You Can Try," and Jim seems anxious to inform us of that dubious progress towards reality. His love songs ("Eve" and "Open Your Heart") are sentimentally appealing, just as much of the imagery of his philosophical statements is both clever and evocative of Traffic's early flights of lyrical fancy–eerie places visited, prophetic sights seen.
With such a well-tried and well-endowed assembly of instrumental talent, it comes as no surprise to find that musically, the album is little short of brilliant, even if Capaldi's words are hardly joyous in themselves, their meaning in the context of Traffic plus sidemen plus horns and choruses warps into definite shades of "up" Jim has a sweet smooth easy voice which belies his gaunt demeanor, and lots of vocal energy blending most tastefully with the faultless fluidity of rhythms and melodies laid down by Winwood and the boys, with production to match by Chris Blackwell and Jim himself.
Not surprisingly, little new ground is broken, but you don't expect the avant-garde, what you do expect, and get, is a collection of subtle and beautifully executed variations on Traffic's contemporary musical themes of multiple rhythms and intelligent rock with the welcome addition of clean and slinky electric guitars (by Mason, Jimmy Johnson, and Paul Kossoff, the latter predominating) and, of course, the unbeatable Muscle Shoals Horns. Not a whiff of mediocrity to be heard.
Oh How We Danced adds up to an impressive debut for Capaldi, mastermind–certainly the equal of The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys and a tasty morsel from one of the most inspiring of vintage rock bands.
