JIM LEEDY: Sings (Peak LP=JL-101)
My review in The Acid Archives (for which this copy was used) describes this best:
One of the biggest appeals of the private press LP is the often simple and primitive look of the cover. A good cover gives off an aura that makes one anticipate music that matches.
The Leedy cover certainly has that aura. The strange twisted-looking being Leedy himself drew on the front cover gives the expectation of hearing the baring of a loner’s dark soul in the grooves found inside. The first song, “Move Inside My Mind” does indeed meet that expectation. Leedy’s non-melodious baritone is enhanced by echoes as he sings the title phrase in the chorus. The verses do indeed bare a dark twisted soul. However, as the rest of the album demonstrates, that soul does not belong to Jim Leedy. Unfortunately, the balance of the album is nothing more than a typical traditional folk LP, though, its sparse low-grade recording may trick the uninitiated into mistaking this for a dark loner edge. Leedy accompanies himself unmemorably on acoustic guitar, and without the echo, singing comes off like any other amateur strumming out folk tunes in his living room for friends and family. He intones rather dated and uninspired messages of (as the liner notes claim) “his deep concern for man’s inhumanity to man through war, ecology and general social problems”. Yeah, whatever.
Leedy is well-known throughout the art world as a painter, ceramicist, lecturer and teacher. Sometime, people do make the right career choice.
This record has also been described as dark loner folk, psych. "the first song being cheerful compared to the rest of the LP" and other superlatives. As the Moody Blues once said "We decide which is right and which is an illusion". So buy this copy and decide.
The cover is VG+ (ringwear - mild on front, more noticeable on back; some wear at all seam corners with tiny amounts of cardboard visible.
The record looks and plays VG (very blemishy press; several long thin scuff lines on each side; no deep scratches; intermittent crackling on all tracks that is noticeable but not intrusive on the music; a few louder crackles on a couple of songs, but still not overbearing).
See my other auctions for more LP's featured in the Acid Archives books. Many of the ones included are the actual review copies.
GENERAL INFO
SHIPPING: Shipping costs will be quoted based on cost for estimated weight plus $1.00 to cover most of the cost of packing materials.
All records are packed in in between two cardboard filler pads and shipped in professional cardboard mailing boxes. All unsealed 12" records are taken out of their covers to prevent seam splitting. If there is a custom inner sleeve, the record will be put in a separate white inner. If a 7" record comes in a picture sleeve, the same procedure is followed.
GRADING: I grade records both visually and audibly. As grading is so imprecise and subjective, I don't have a set grading description like you see listed in many auction and collector magazines. My grades for records and covers are based on the overall conditions I describe in each auction; I will note any visual defects and (for the vinyl) any non-musical sounds (pops, clicks, skips, etc.).
