What we have here technically DOES NOT EXIST and is not supposed to exist. To our best knowledge, the existence of this record-club-only issue previously has never been substantiated, and none of the price books and guides currently in print make any reference to its existence or background. According to both Tim Neely and Neil Umphread price guides (multiple editions), the only Jimi Hendrix album ever issued on Capitol Records Club/Reprise label (and with the different catalog number - assigned by CAPITOL records and NOT by Reprise), was his posthumous "Rainbow Bridge" soundtrack. The historical importance of this item cannot be overestimated. Namely, Capitol records and Reprise were at loggerheads over Jimi Hendrix' career literally from the very first moment Jimi Hendrix signed for Reprise, with Capitol claiming (more or less successfully) that Jimi was contractually tied to Capitol Records and that he owed them (at least) one more album. We believe - but have no firm or concrete proof to substantiate our claim - that this Capitol Records issue was Reprise's attempt to toss a little something to Capitol records in order to appease them. If this was the motive, it did not work. Capitol pressed on until they forced Jimi to record his final album (Band of Gypsies) for Capitol records (score one for corporate greed, for God knows it was Jimi's finest hour, and not merely a "contractual obligation album").
To go back to "The Cry of Love" for a second. This version has a distinct Reprise Records customized label which makes a pointed reference to the Capitol Records (see the photo of the label); the cover has CAPITOL RECORDS catalog number stamped on the back of the Reprise stock cover!!!. Literally and figuratively, a piece of history, not to be missed at any price.
***
This is the final batch of recordings Jimi Hendrix completed before his death, and probably the last recordings he ever intended public to hear. His conversion from Fender to Gibson resulted in a clearer and sharper sound, which was much jazzier, but - alas - much less improvisational and spontaneous in nature. The songs assembled on this album are some of the finest he created during his all-too-short career. The songs are: Freedom - Drifting - Ezy Rider - Night Bird Flying - My Friend - Straight Ahead - Astro Man - Angel - In from the Storm - Belly Button Window. In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s , as the legal battle between Jimi Hendrix’ family and his long-time manager Allan Douglas heated up, we experienced the arrival of two revisionist pieces of history: The first, Allan Douglas’ "Voodoo Soup" album , which purports to compile Jimi Hendrix’s final album in the shape the artist himself would have wanted - and the second, a few years later , titled "The First Rays of the New Rising Sun", issued by Hendrix’ estate , claiming exactly the same thing, sporting some nice sound and plain godawful pseudo-psychedelic cover which undoubtedly made Jimi make a triple salto-mortale in his grave. So far, nobody succeeded in ascertaining with any degree of certainty just exactly what Jimi Hendrix’s true intentions were and how his final album would have looked had he himself been involved in its release. What we do know is that this is the last Jimi Hendrix album and that it will never be issued on CD (or, for that matter, LP) again, courtesy of Hendrix’ family members. Miss it now, and CRY (of love, or otherwise) LATER.
THIS IS A NO-RESERVE AUCTION!

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD+ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)
We could not "feel" these abrasions with our fingertip, and we suspect that they are NOT audible.
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
(d) We estimate that common, stock copies of this album outnumber Record Club copies by a ratio of at least 80:1.
· COVER
THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD / VG
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- The gatefold cover has partially split seams on _ out of 4 "legs" of the cover (about 7 inches / 1 inch = 2.5 centimeters).
- Cover has a partially split spine (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)
- Cover has two corners slightly worn / frayed / bent (just a beginning of the split seam)
- Cover has some fraying/wear along the spine
- Cover has some fraying/wear along the lower seam
- Minor shelf wear noted on the top seam (nothing significant)
- Cover has some ring wear; On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3 (front side) and 5 (back side); Inside gatefold also has some light ring wear
- Cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.
- Cover shows some light yellowing on front side, apparently from aging.
- Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease) in one of the corners.
NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:
- No cut-out (drill) holes.
- No cut-out corners
- No saw-marks or indents
- No writing
- No stamps
- No peel-off marks
- No mold or mildew spots
- No stickers or labels
- No water damage
- No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.
- No warping
