Label/Format: Track – Intense black and very matt with smooth surface. This has the small ridge near the hole. (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, incredibly fresh and attractive and look really incredible to the eye, these are very difficult to find looking like this. Spindle marks are around to moderate in number but fine enough to only really show with angled light viewing. These spindle marks are truly deceptive as the record surfaces are little short of immaculate and the sound quality the same. In all my time selling on Ebay, this beautiful mono record is up there with the very best I have seen or heard – and this is a very difficult album indeed. More information further down.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 150 grams. A very good weight for this record and quite possibly my heaviest copy yet.

Rarity: Moderately rare and getting harder to find all the time as early original Hendrix albums are in high demand with fewer available copies being found or offered. Most offered are played into the ground and only offer less-than-wonderful sound with playing surfaces awash with scratches and rife with invisible groovewear. This stunning example is light-years away from this at the other end of spectrum. The cover has just one noteworthy crease and minimal other wear. The record gleams and has clearly been played very lightly – the owner said this had not been played much at all and the spindle marks were simply for hole alignment. In fact he said the record had not been even touched for decades and on all the visual and audio evidence, I would not argue for a second. Mono copies of this legendary album in such condition are very hard to find and this record is simply gorgeous. Just think, this album was in the shops and purchased when he was still alive, touring and at his very best.

Brief Info: In the most famous year in music which saw so many classics and great debuts issued, this amazing album stood out and even today still thrills. Classic blues-based psychedelia, Hendrix almost reinvented the electric guitar. Powerful backing from Michell and Redding this extraordinary record is testament to this man’s legend and memory. This is a very early mono copy, the stereo version came slightly later. This is a superb copy too with the cleanest of clean mono records, just the way the discerning collecgtor wants them. Of the three Experience covers, this one always wears the least well with the back fully exposed. The actual record too is very difficult to find that has not been subjected to heavy use and traumas associated with thick heavy mono stylus (sometimes chipped or worn causing irrepairable damage to the delicate groove walls that results in distortion and sound break-up). I have seen seen examples of this title that almost defy description; suffice to say politely – they are unplayable. Even with many plays, it still never fails to amaze me how records can get into such a state but seeing is believing – I leave them well alone, if a record does not please me, why should it please any potential buyer? This very early Track mono record has clearly been played little – I state again – the spindle marks on the labels are deceptive and do not tell a true story, confirmed by the owner, and without any doubt when it was played, it was with utmost care on a quality record player. NO deep penetrating scratches that are rarely avoided from the ‘Dansette’ era – both playing surfaces are stunning and truly do remind of new with only the faintest of faint surface traces when scrutinised directly under bright, angled light. This plays beautifully and very quietly. This is important because this album was not recorded loudly, in fact the recording is fairly quiet and to get the best out of this album, the volume has to be turned up. Thus, less-than-perfect examples will sound even more disappointing as any background surface noise or groovewear will be amplified more too. This information is not always mentioned but I consider important. This rare debut has fine detail and is well produced, it’s just the lack of volume compared to many mono albums that is a little unusual. Another similar classic that springs to mind is Love’s ‘Forever Changes’, that is equally recorded with lower volume and is just a fragile. The hugely encouraging factor is it plays totally devoid of any distortion, it remains beautifully focused and the inbuild power of this record still shines through impressively, but turn it up. No pops or clicks were noted and the genius of Hendrix is totally encaptured within these totally unworn grooves. I politely remind also, I play all my records on an LP12, still one of the world’s most critical and sensitive turntables – this record was not really designed for this type of equipment, but simply sounds stunning in this type of condition. It will take a remarkable example that will offer cleaner or better sound and most vinyl connoisseurs and Hendrix collectors will enjoy this beauty.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High: the back especially is very prone to wear.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single format and laminated on the front, the back is matt and smooth. It was printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day & Co Ltd, London and still has the ‘Patent Pending’ text next to this imprint.

Lamination & Front: My grading hardly does this super cover full justice, for a cover somewhere areound 44 years old, this has survived in very impressive condition. The main issue is a moderate surface crease near the bottom left corner area which does not show up too sell on my picture due to the flash. The crease is relatively fine but emphasised a little by lightly lifting the laminate next to it. Hardly major but it does show. Any other creases are pretty much just fine edge types that few covers of this great age will ever avoid totally. The laminate retains a very fine shine, freshness and clarity with only very light traces of friction rubs or dulling under angled light. No other lifting of any note. The right and left edges are not laminated, the exposed strips show minimal traces of any wear and have avoided any chipping, grime lines or noteworthy rubbing – this will seldom happen. There is NO tipping-in or enhancements to this cover whatsoever and the famous trio graphic will seldom be seen a great deal better as seen in close-up.

Cover Back: The back looks very impressive and most will know just how prone to wear this is. The main issue is a ‘Harlequin Records’ tape sticker near the bottom edge. These are relatively common and they were made never to be removed – cheap publicity for the shop that was clearly deliberate. Very widely, NO attempt has been made to remove it, hence no damage and it is still neat and clean. Personally, I do not consider this an issue, it is simply part of the album’s history but that is purely a subjective point-of-view. The matt back is clean and barely aged at all with any marks few and faint and any rubbing minuscule. Barely a crease to be seen and this back has bucked the trend and avoided any noteworthy wear at all.

Top Edge: Barely any wear at all. The fold retains full laminate and is smooth, unscuffed and straight. The end panel itself shows minimal traces of any thickening or burring.

Bottom Edge: Practically as above, a merest hint of a bow being ultra critical.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little real wear and no feathering. Any thickening or burring to the thin card is very small and slight and this is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. Record enters here.

Spine and Text: An immensely fragile and exposed spine, quite a thin and delicate and few survive anything close to ‘perfect’. In fact, most found have lost all the text and often thin and split. This is solid, straight and only modestly darkened a little with age. Lightly compressed with a high percentage of the text intact and present. A little patchy rubbing or clipping to a few letters and the final digit of the catalogue number, but compared to many this is still quite impressive.

Corners: Again impressive: any tip rubs are tiny and these are exceptional for a thin cover. No tip-ins minimal tip creasing and all retain excellent or better shape.

Cover Summary: A beautiful example, yes a little light rubbing on the spine and the front crease, so not perfect for the very discerning collector. But this sets the bar high and most fans and collectors will enjoy it.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a Polydor style cover that is date coded 119. This is fairly mildy aged with darkening and some toning of the adhesive on the seams. A polylined inner that has avoided any noteworthy creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. The lining is remains very clear with minimal crinkle as seen through two very crisp and undamaged window circles.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and hardly does it full justice. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. Both playing surfaces look fantastic and these emphasise the modesty this record has been played, forget unreliable spindle mark evidence. In theory, a once played record could have several spindle marks if the owner used the label as a guide to the hole – and this was a very common practice as many record players hid the spindle from view especially pull-down furniture type radiograms of which I am more than familiar from my boyhood as my parents had one. This has NO penetrating marks and merely ultra fine and faint surface traces as seen critically under light. The freshness and shine of the surfaces is testament to a few ultra careful plays and totally unaffected by bad queuing, jolts or arm-drops. A legendary album that defies it’s great age and mode. This is how the connoisseur wants classic mono record to look (and sound). Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors – finding this better will prove beyond difficult.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This beautiful old record plays even above it's high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. As stated above, not the loudest cut ever made but simply use the volume control, it’s what it’s there for. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. I have mentioned the sound quality in my information paragraph above, and hardly need to expand further. This is an exceptional example that time has largely overlooked. I was told it has not been touched or played for decades, and I am convinced this is the case. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has generally been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Simply compare this to the average available copy on offer – chalk and cheese – this is an gorgeous mono record and nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading it. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. Still one of the greatest rock-psych albums of all-time, do not lose this one.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
