Label/Format: Track – Very intense matt black surfaces with the original mono logo. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both look fantastic and rare to see with so little spindle wear or marks. Side one label has very light only, side two more light+ but all fine with minimal visibility. I have little doubt this lovely album has only been played very lightly.

Cat Number: 612003.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 138 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Rare in fine condition. This one includes the original lyric sheet, often referred to as a ‘poster’. It came with a few early pressed copies only and it remains elusive and difficult to find in fine condition too. Often mounted with pin holes or cellotape marks (or torn). This is unmounted and very neat. Complete examples of this mono album are very rare and highly sort-after.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Always a pleasure to offer an early mono copy of this Hendrix treasure - the second of the three Experience classics - they are getting very hard to find at all now, clean copies that play well are even more ellusive. This album charted at 5 and 3 in the UK and US respectively, a hugely strong follow up to the classic Are You Experienced (also on offer), slightly less demonstrative of his guitar skills but proving himself as a formidable song writer, including several reflective compositions none better than the haunting ‘Little Wing’. Axis… always features high in any list of all times greats and justifiably so. How many times do you see this record offered, just to find its been played into oblivion? Massive solid masses of spindle marks around the centre hole, the record covered in a multitude of scratches, scuffs and a dulled grey looking piece of vinyl covered in a maze of finger marks or caked in dust or grime? An album as important as most in that great year of 1967 - the summer of love - just think this record was actually purchased while the great man was still alive - This makes a record like this indispensable. This vintage mono copy includes the rare insert (these are super hard to find now, they came with only some first pressings, not all), it has a strong cover with only relatively mild blemishes. The sound and mix on this early copy is amazing, and of course it sounds very different to the stereo version. The record has been only lightly played and retains stunning crisp sound and no distortion, this is way, way above average and should please most collectors. The only small blemish of note is a groove skip BETWEEN tracks two and three on side one. NOT on a music part, but on the joining groove so NO music is disturbed or spoilt. The tiniest of marks only and just a one rev sound only - pretty much the only blemish on this wonderful record. The sound on this vintage record will never be beaten, this is the real thing, no remixing, remastering no tampering, it was produced by Chas Chandler and this is how he wanted it to sound. This sound and mix on this vintage Track copy is definitive, sit back and enjoy it and listen in awe of the master genius that was Jimi Hendrix.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Moderate+.

Cover Grade and Format: EX but actually looks better. There are some light pressing marks on the front that only show with angled viewing so have slightly downgraded from what should be an EX+ cover. A gatefold format with front and back laminate. The inside gatefold has four flipbacks at the top and bottom. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day & Co Ltd and includes the super-rare lyric insert ‘poster’. Please beware of copies – these will be less intense in colour usually with less than sharp text.

Lamination – Front & Back: Retaining a lovely shine and clarity and all fully adhered with no lifting or blisters. The breathtaking, brightly coloured and vivid artwork can still be enjoyed to near maximum advantage and a high degree of freshness is present. Most of any creasing lies around the edges and is mainly fine. As stated above, there are some pressmarks and some light surface marks but these only show with angled viewing. Normal viewing reveals little and this is still a highly attractive cover. Hardly any friction rubs or dulling and just a mild dull around the LP shape on the back – again it hardly shows. Overall a lovely 40-year-old cover. There will be better ones around but believe me, there will be many many much worse than this. It will please the majority of collectors reading this I am sure, but not quite good enough for the perfectionists.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is superb with practically nothing to fault. The four flipbacks are immaculate with ultra neat ends and only a small few surface hairline surface creases but NO damage at all. This famous ‘Experience’ portrait looks stunning.

Top Edges: Both unworn.

Bottom Edges: And again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering. The front edge is sealed. Record enters on this back edge.

Spine and Text: A super spine with little wear: Solid, straight, uncompressed and square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. Minor rubs to the very top and bottom only, there is no text matter printed on this one. The artwork flows around and shows barely any traces of wear under the solid and uncracked laminate. The odd microscopic chip if being really critical.

Corners: Small tip rubs on the spine pair but nothing drastic to say the least. The four right ones are very neat indeed with hardly any wear at all and these retain superb shape and definition.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this famous 60’s cover, one of the most colourful and famous from this heady era. It will prove difficult to find significantly better. This beautiful item should please many and probably most collectors, but as stated, a little below connoisseur standard.

The Inner: The original unlined plain white inner is included in fine condition. Some creasing but no edge splits or tears and a lovely neat window. Grading around EX overall.

The Poster Lyric Insert: EX+ at the very least and guaranteed ORIGINAL. As stated there are fakes around but they should be clearly and obviously inferior. This has a single manufactured fold which is solid and unstressed with no splits or weakening. The orange colour is intense and has the correct matt finish – it is also UNMOUNTED. NO pinholes, cellotape or blue tak marks on the back at all. The edges are crisp and sharp and guaranteed UNTRIMMED. No real creasing, just a few light press marks and slight surface ruffling. The white back is generally clean with only the odd minor mark. Printed on thin paper and clearly fragile, this 40-year-old+ insert will never be easy to find much better than this. Elusive and so often missing, this really is the icing on the cake.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX by the book as it has a few light surface marks or hairlines but these have NO sound. Just one faint blemish has a couple of faint ticks. As already mentioned above, there is a groove jump between songs two and three on side one. It has NO effect on the music as it’s on a joining groove, so a one rev click only and it does not impair the brilliance of this album’s sound at all. Still a superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. Retaining genuine freshness and a lovely lustre, this really is undergraded as EX especially as it plays superbly throughout. A copy with very modest plays on all the evidence reitterated by fantastic audio quality. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again – slightly below connoisseur standard again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This highly-prized, legendary classic psych record plays even above its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. I have mentioned the main blemish on the joining groove. Clearly if this had been on the music area it would have been significant, but glad to state it ISN’T. With just a quick click and groove skip, this has NO effect on any music at all – all over in a fraction of a second. This tiny blemish apart, this entire album tracks effortlessly and was a real pleasure to play-grade. Strong, distortion-free sound throughout – never take this for granted on any mono record, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and few other pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Any others are ultra few, brief and mild – such is the quality of the music here, anything minor simply washed-over me. I found myself more engrossed in the music and detail than the odd minor sound blemish. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. We all know what the majority of mono records of this era can and do look like these days. Grimy, deep scratches and terrible worn grooves that are unlistenable – we have all experienced them. I will NOT offer such rubbish, this is a lovely record and it’s minor light visual blemishes are largely ignored. Remember too, this mono record was not really designed to be played on high-end clinical stereo turntables – but this excels and was a delight to listen too – the mono sound and mix is unique to vinyl and little comes close. Nothing really spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended, especially in mono and including the prized insert. If you have doubts however, do not bid – I cannot say fairer and I have clearly mentioned any minor blemishes – you now decide.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
