Record One is Sides A and D, and Record Two is Sides B and C. Back in the 1960's double albums were made this way so they could be played on record players with Auto Changers. This way you only had to turn both Records once as they dropped down onto each other for playing .

With Electric Ladyland Hendrix took psychedelic experimentation as far as he could within the original Experience trio format. That meant pushing the barriers of late 60's studio technology as far as they could bend, particularly with regard to multitracking and effects that could only be achieved through certain treatments and manipulation of the tape itself. It also meant greater freedom and looseness in the playing and the songwriting, which could be both a plus and a drawback, as the compositions became both less constricted and less concise.

This is Hendrix at his best: the dreamy wah-wah guitars of " Rainy Day, Dream Away " were only matched by the dreaminess of the lyrics, and " Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland) " and " Gypsy Eyes " were also standouts. " 1983.... ( A Mermaid I Should Turn To Be) " and " Voodoo Chile " were lenghty cuts dominated by jam-like instrumental passages; " Cross Town Traffic " and a cover of Bob Dylan's " All Along The Watchtower " by contrast, were two of his catchiest and most pop friendly tunes.

" Voodoo Chile " , " Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) " and a cover of Earl King's " Come On " are three of his most determined forays into blues, albeit the blues as fed through a nearly Avant-Garde filter. This classic album is still today a bench mark in rock and has yet to be surpassed.

In his brief four year reign as a superstar, Jimi Hendrix expanded the vocabulary of the electric rock guitar more than anyone before or since. Hendrix was a master at coaxing all manner of unforeseen sonics from his instrument, often with innovative amplification experiments that produced astral-quality feedback and roaring distortion. His frequent hurricane blasts of noise, and dazzling showmanship - he could and would play behind his back and with his teeth, and set his guitar on fire has sometimes obscured his great talent as a gifted songwriter.

" Are You Experienced " was an astonishing debut album from someone who admitted that he had never previously written his own material. But what caught everyone's attention was his virtuosic guitar playing, which employed an arsenal of devices, including wah-wah pedals, buzzing feedback solos, crunching distorted riffs, and lightning, liquid runs up and down the scales.

But Hendrix was also a first-rate songwriter, melding cosmic imagery with some surprisingly pop-savvy hooks and tender sentiments. He was also an excellent blues enterpreter and passionate, engaging singer. " Are You Experienced " was psychedelia at its most electric, synthesizing mod pop, soul, R&B, Bob Dylan, and the electric guitar innovations of British pioneers like Jekk Beck, Pete Townshend and Eric Clapton. Amazingly, Hendrix would only record tree fully concieved studio albums in his lifetime. " Axis Bold As Love" and the glorious double LP " Electric Ladyland" On this fabulous double album, Hrndrix pioneered the use of the studio itself as a recording instrument, manipulating electronics and devising overdub techniques to plot uncharted sonic territory.
