It's interesting more as a contrast to his later yuppie-scum beach-a$$hole persona, as it's got a lot more in common with early John Prine than anything - it's twangy and folky. Also, he calls people out on the first track for choosing to drink beer instead of giving to charity - those Margaritas ain't free, future-Buffett! Despite that, hes back on message with the next track, the royally-unsubtle Ellis Dee (LSD, gettit??). It's a lot less obnoxious than his later stuff, but also never gets to that unifying middle ground between country earnestness and drunken prick of Let's Get Drunk and Screw that we can all enjoy.

Yes, that smiling youth with a non-receding hairline pictured on the back cover is actually Jimmy Buffett, back in 1970 when this was a new album on a label that's long since stopped making phonograph records for the masses. In 1998 Down to Earth finally came out on compact disc in its original form, with only "Richard Frost" as a bonus track to flesh it out. Instead, the focus stays right on Buffett's strong early writing and his almost organic empathy with his backing band, making tracks like "Truckstop Salvation," "Ellis Dee (He Ain't Free)," "The Christian?," and "Captain America" some of the best of his early recordings.

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has a small cutout corner visible

-       Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-       Visible shelf wear noted on the bottom seam

-       Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1  (front side) and 2 (back side).

-       Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.
