Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio, there are four recording sessions on this LP The first was on September 9, 1960 featuring Forrest, along with Oliver Nelson and King Curtis on tenors, Gene Casey on piano, George Duvivier on bass and Roy Haynes on drums. They play SOUL STREET. The next session was on September 1, 1961 featuring Forrest with Hugh Lawson on piano, Calvin Newborn on guitar, Tommy Potter on bass and Clarence Johnston on drums. They perform THAT’S ALL. The next session was on October 19, 1961 with the same personnel, adding Ray Barretto on conga with I LOVE YOU and SONNY BOY. The last was on June 1, 1962, this session features Jimmy Forrest on tenor with Oliver Nelson arrangements. Accompanying him are: Ernie Royal on trumpet, Jimmy Cleveland on trombone, George Barrow, Selden Powell and Jimmy Forrest on tenors, Chris Woods on piano, Mundell Lowe on guitar, Richard Davis on bass and Ed Shaughnessy on drums. They perform: SOFT SUMMER BREEZE; EXPERIMENT IN TERROR and JUST SITTIN’ AND “A” ROCKIN’. “VAN GELDER” is stamped on both sides of the blank vinyl. This is a MONO recording. I have rated this LP as EX for the following reasons. The vinyl is clear of any marks on both sides. There is no wear around or in the spindle hole. The record is given a M- rating. The record jacket has on small taped seam on the top seam. “PREVIEW COPY” is stamped on the liner notes. There are a few water spots on the liner notes and some deterioration on the cover, which I blame Prestige for cheapening their product. It’s just enough to bring this down to a EX rating.
