Jimmy Giuffre was an American jazz clarinetist and saxophonist who helped propose ideas in jazz around free improvisation that led to some remarkably fluid, spirited works as his career matured in the 50s and 60s. 50 years on from its initial release, Music For People, Birds, Butterflies & Mosquitoes sounds like a landmark vision. It might be framed as free jazz, but it retains a harmonious, soulful quality which is more readily aligned with Sun Ra, or even as grounded as Yusef Lateef and Pharaoh Sanders. Joined by Randy Kaye on percussion and Kiyoshi Tokunaga on bass, the sharply focused trio found a veritable menagerie of expression that sounds just as vital in the modern day.
