Redlands High School A Cappella Choir and Triple Trio -- Benefit For Muscular Dystrophy 1955-56 LP

Original 1955 or 1956 US mono custom pressing issued by Century Record Co. (Burbank CA) (catalog # NONE, Western Electric Recording, red color vinyl, matrix # V-5976). Just the LP in a plain brown sleeve, no cover (this album almost certain was never issued with a cover.)This incredibly rare high school LP from 1955-1956 is the first record Joan Baez ever sang on, a custom-pressed recording of her high school choir in Redlands, California, during the 1955-56 school year. This record was most likely never available commercially, pressed in a limited edition with one copy going to each student. This must be from December, 1955, as there are several Christmas songs on here.
There are no individual student credits listed, so Joan Baez's name is not printed on here, but she attended Redlands High School in 1955-56 and she sang in the choir. In her memoir she explains that she sang alto, soprano and even tenor in the choir. So although it does not explicitly say so, she must be one of the voices heard on this album.
In Joan's autobiography And A Voice To Sing With -- A Memoir, she writes about her days at Redlands High School and singing in the choir: "It was the sense of isolation, of being 'different', that initially led me to develop my voice. I was in the school choir and sang - alto, second soprano, soprano, and even tenor, depending on what was most needed. Mine was a plain, little girl's voice, sweet and true, but stringy as cheap cotton thread, and as thin and straight as the blue line on a piece of binder paper." Previously the first recorded appearance of Joan Baez was thought to be the 1959 Folksingers 'round Harvard Square custom pressing on Veritas Records. This much rarer high school album predates that record by 3 to 4 years.
CONDITION: / Vinyl GOOD ONLY vinyl has a good deal of wear and surface scuffing, along with a number of light surface scratches; there are several deeper scratches which do cause some tics but since they're straight and not radial scratches they do not cause skips; checked all the way through and plays with a fair bit of surface noise and some tics but no skips or repeats; the mp3 above was taken from this LP and cleaned up a bit using simple audio software, so even though there is surface noise and tics it's possible to get a somewhat decent idea of what this record sounds like. Graded conservatively using Goldmine standards [G / G+ / VG / VG+ / NM / ]grade only used if record is brand new.
