CLICK HERE AND LISTEN TO THE SOUNDCLIP / MP3 (apologies... our soundburger records 45s faster than normal :(

EL PITO (I'LL NEVER GO BACK GEORGIA) / ARECIBO ... 7-inch, 45rpm single by THE JOE CUBA SEXTET production by PANCHO CRISTAL. Original US pressing on the TICO label (T-470), from 1966. Killer double-sider (great for DJs ;) mixing up latin soul / boogaloo / mambo jazz and funky salsa. Conga player Joe Cuba (real name, Gilberto Miguel Calderón) was a key figure in the evolution of the latin soul sound in New York and like Ray Barretto, was a master at fusing American R&B influences with Afro-Cuban instrumentation. EL PITO is maybe his biggest anthem. Amazing from start to finish with its groovy vocal shouts and whistles that spike the delirious arrangement. Uptempo montuno piano and bassline / vibes and percussion ;) The "I'll never go back to Georgia" hook was inspired by Dizzy Gillespie's Manteca as vocalist and timbalero Jimmy Sabater was struck both by the political connotations and the way the cadence of the phrase perfectly fitted a clave rhythm. The ARECIBO side is also superb. Lots more infectious vocals over a funky montuno / salsa groove that blasts off midway with hard percussion breaks and vibes solos. Booming production and yet another fine example of the Nuyorican / El Barrio / Spanish Harlem sound. Lovely condition too. Rare 45!!!

Musicians on this recording:

Joe Cuba - congas

Jimmy Sabater - timbales / vocals

Tommy Berrios - vibes

Nick Jiménez - piano

Jules “Slim” Cordero - bass

Willie Torres or Jose Cheo Feliciano - vocals

Our record grading: SEALED / M- / VG++ / VG+ / VG

Vinyl is closer to shiny M- condition overall regardless of a few hairlines and a couple of tiny pressing bubbles. Booming production sound. Light surface noises. A few soft pops / ticks (as you can hear on the soundclip). A couple of audible bumps from a tiny pressing bubble on intro of "El Pito" and another tiny pressing bubble circa midway "Arecibo" side. Item taken from an unplayed deadstock of records and played once for the recording of the soundclip. The custom TICO label paper sleeve is in VG+ condition with general wear. Archive sticker and number in pen to front and back sleeve. Some wear and tears (mostly to top open side). Rare 45!!!

Please feel free to contact us with any condition queries you may have preferably before bidding. We will get back to you asap.
