Car 54 Where Are You STAR sings ?!?!?
Americans love a snappy catchphrase. It’s so much easier to say, “Excuuuse me!” or “That’s the ticket!” than to think up something witty yourself. Aside from the Fonz’s “Aaaaay!” the all-time easiest catchphrase to imitate had to be Joe E. Ross’s inexplicably popular “Ooh! Ooh!”
Club comic Ross first came to national attention on The Phil Silvers Show and achieved TV immortality in 1961 on NBC’s Car 54, Where Are You? As Officer Toody, the Muppet-esque Ross would hop from foot to foot like a child desperate for a bathroom, and squawk, “Ooh! Ooh!” every time he thought of something stupid to say, which seemed to be about every two minutes. This infantile bit so took the nation’s fancy, Ross built an entire career on it. He “ooh-oohed” prehistorically as caveman Gronk on It’s About Time (CBS, 1967), he “ooh-oohed” in various commercials (although that was just grunt work), and, naturally, he made a record of it.
“Ooh! Ooh!” begins with Ross suggesting, “When you get a good idea, and you need someone to tell it to, just scratch your head and roll your eyes, and simply say...” Suddenly, the sub-Hullabaloo backing track kicks in, and a group of gum-popping chorines joins Joey in shouting “Ooh! Ooh!” over and over and over, until you just want to slap them. Alas, the gals then begin chanting, “Sing along with Joooooo-ey!” to a tune every child will instantly recognize as “Nyah-na-nyah-na-nyaaaaaah-nyah!” The first irritating verse is repeated endlessly, to a distorted, wall-of-mush accompaniment that sounds like a Gary U.S. Bonds single played with a fuzzy needle, and the whole mess is topped with a shrill sax that pierces your skull like a dentist’s drill. Play it loud enough, and we guarantee that cops will appear at your door.
