JOE SAVAGE: Appearing Nightly (Cap-orion 32175/1976)

Maybe the strangest lounge-oriented real people LP out there (and out there describes this well). My review in The Acid Archives (for which this copy was used) describes this best:

The brief liner notes say Savage was a boy growing up in Brooklyn who dreamed to travel the world as an entertainer, but now wants to travel to distant planets to entertain aliens. I don’t know if he ever made it, but his music definitely did.

Straight (or as straight as this loony could ever be) lounge covers mix with deep space excursions. A surprising, ghostly version of the Music Machine's “Come On In” and a cover of”Locomotive Breath” sound like a helium swallowing Arthur Brown. How many loungers have you heard singing “Steering wheels inside your head/ Have come undone, but it’s no matter if you don’t delay”? Not many, I suppose.

The “normal” songs don’t sound fully rooted to terra firma themselves. This is due not only to Savage’s eerie vocal style, but also to all the instrumental backing, which all sounds tuned to some alien frequency, or they’re just off-key like the sickly string synthesizer that leads them. This reaches its extreme during the instrumental section of the greatest of all lounge songs, “MacArthur Park”. To remind us of his roots, Joe ends with a version of “Brooklyn Roads” that surely left Neil Diamond cringing under the covers

The cover is VG- (ringwear on front, lighter ringwear on back; wear & cracking on spine, but no splitting; wear on bottom spine with 3/4" split at opening; 5 1/2" split on top seam at opening, rest of seam has wear; crease in upper left corner; some creasing along left side).
The record looks VG+ (light scuff marks and lines on both sides). It plays VG (frequent crackle throughout most songs; no clicks or pops). There are two spots where the needle sticks (one on Locomotive Breath, the other on the first song on the second side). However, there are no visible flaws at either spot, plus my own copy has the same sticking at the exact same spots, leading me to conclude these are pressing defects. Both copies were played on several different turntables with mixed results (some sticking, some playing through).
The winner of this auction buys this with this knowledge, therefore no returns will be accepted for this complaint.

GENERAL INFO

SHIPPING: Shipping costs will be quoted based on cost for estimated weight plus $1.00 to cover most of the cost of packing materials.

All records are packed in in between two cardboard filler pads and shipped in professional cardboard mailing boxes. All unsealed  12" records are taken out of their covers to prevent seam splitting. If there is a custom inner sleeve, the record will be put in a separate white inner. If a 7" record comes in a picture sleeve, the same procedure is followed.

GRADING: I grade records both visually and audibly. As grading is so imprecise and subjective, I don't have a set grading description like you see listed in many auction and collector magazines. My grades for  records and covers are based on the overall conditions I describe in each auction; I will note any visual defects and (for the vinyl) any non-musical sounds (pops, clicks, skips, etc.).
