This is one of a number of vinyl records from the 1950’s & 60’s listed this week which we no longer listen to. Little played, the records are still in very good condition, the covers sometimes less so.

I have carefully examined this record and listened to it a number of times in order to be able to record as accurately as I can anything which may be seen and its impact on the listening experience.

Gradings are based on the “Record Collector Magazine's Guide” set out in the eBay Guides together with notes about condition added. Extracts from the Gramophone Magazine review written at the time of the record’s release are included, with the permission of the publishers, where these are available.

RECORD GRADING

VERY GOOD

Under normal lighting both sides of this record look clean, still gleam and appear to have very few marks on the surface or spindle marks on the label.

Under very bright halogen light, however, fine hairlines and surface rubbings can clearly be seen on both sides one or two of which do look as if they might produce intrusive sound.

Very often, on the early heavy vinyl of which this record is made, surface marks such as those found here often do not impact on the sound of the record because of the depth of the groove, and this is largely the case with this record.

On both sides, with one exception, I did not hear runs of repetitive sounds of more about 3 in succession. The sounds I heard were almost all just light, background ticks or soft pops and isolated dust ticks.

I have put together a record of the times at which these sounds occur and will happily provide details of them to any interested buyer. For example, on side 1, at 3:45 there were 3 light pops; at 6:55 there were 2 more and at 8 minutes there were another 3 with a couple of lighter ones afterwards.

What offends one person’s ear yet not another is entirely subjective I know but I do have to say I did not find any of these light, usually background and often much masked by the music, sounds had a detrimental effect on the listening experience for me.

The exception I referred to earlier occurs on side 1 after about 19 minutes, during the cadenza. There are light ticks and a few pops, both random and repetitive, over the next 3 minutes, but they are not loud, intrusive pops. Some are very much in the background and some are masked by the music. On the record surface there is a fine hairline, which looks rather like a poor lift-off of the arm, which has left a fine hairline. It is a broken line, not continuous, and it extends a little into the run-off area. Again, I didn’t find the sounds it generated spoiled the enjoyment of the music for me, but you should know it is there and the effects it produces.

On side 2, the quiet second movement is a piece which is very vulnerable to the effects of surface marks and, though there are such marks on this side, the whole movement played very sweetly throughout with almost no audible surface sound other than occasional dust type ticks. The third movement played the same, no unwanted sounds, just the occasional dust tick.

Because I understand this to be a sought after record I have examined and listened to it with great care in order to provide as accurate a description as possible. I, perhaps, am being over critical of it considering it is 60 years since it was first issued. I do regard it as at least a very good record and its surface blemishes, almost without exception, have very little effect on the quality of the sound - which some might even say is excellent.

COVER GRADING

GOOD

Unlike the record, the cover is a disappointment. Whilst almost all of its information remains intact and unharmed and the cover acceptably clean, particularly the back, it has been damaged, and repaired – effectively but not necessarily entirely attractively.

A piece of the lower right corner of the front has been torn away and a replacement inserted which actually does preserve the original appearance of the front. There have also been tears at the upper right corner on both the front and back. All these areas have been successfully taped such that the cover is entirely serviceable. The wording of the concerto has been lost from the spine but the names of the composer and artist remain. Likewise, the surname of the photographer on the front, lower right, has gone.

If one ignores the tear on the back, now taped, it does in all other respects look much as it did when it was produced 60 years ago. The text is unmarked and, overall, the back is very clean. The same could be said of the front but it is a little spoiled by the repair and tears, again all taped, which do draw ones attention.

It is, however, a perfectly serviceable cover for the record but one which  I must grade as only being Good.
