Condition : front laminated flipback cover shows very few slight creases and some minimal wear on the back, EX+ / vinyl has a few minor scuffs which do not affect play at all, EX+

GRADAZIONE RIGOROSA - STRICTLY GRADED

Copertine e vinili sono visualmente gradati dopo un’attenta osservazione sotto la luce del sole fatta sulla mia terrazza a tetto. Nelle giornate grigie vengono controllati sotto una forte lampada alogena con l’aiuto di una lente d’ingrandimento. Tutti i i 33 giri in asta sono stati interamente ascoltati su un giradischi Rega Planar 3 fornito di una testina a magnete mobile Grado Statement 1. Per EP e singoli a 45 giri utilizzo un Thorens TD 166 BC con testina, sempre MM, Goldring 1006. Ritenendo che le abituali classificazioni quali Mint, Ex, Vg, ecc., ecc… siano poco significative per spiegare le reali condizioni dei dischi ed anche estremamente soggettive, precedo sempre tali classificazioni con una breve descrizione degli eventuali difetti che ho riscontrato, ad eccezione di Mint- che il più alto grado che conferisco a qualsiasi disco. Soltanto per le copie ancora sigillate all’origine utilizzo MINT/MINT.

Sleeves and vinyls are visually graded after a careful check in bright sunshine on my roof terrace. In the gray days I watch the records under a strong halogen lamp with the help of a magnifying glass. All LPs in auction have been fully heard on a turntable Rega Planar 3 with a moving magnet cartridge Grado Statement 1. I listen EPs and singles 45 rpm. on a turntable Thorens TD 166 BC with a MM cartridge Goldring 1006. Considering that the usual classifications such as Mint, EX, Vg, etc…, etc… are not significant to explain the real condition of the records in addition to a total subjectivity of opinion, I always introduce before these classifications a short description concerning any defects I have verified with the exception of Mint minus, the highest grade I declare. I use MINT/MINT exclusively for the still from factory sealed copies.

Note : grande album del geniale John Barry che dopo la sua prima colonna sonora pubblicata in LP "Beat Girl" affronta il mondo della musica pop con 15 composizioni interamente strumentali. Cinque di queste sono sue, due : "Donna’s Theme" e "Zapata" provengono da membri del suo gruppo "John Barry Seven", e specificatamente dal pianista Les Reed e dal chitarrista Vic Flick. Le altre sono composizioni scelte non a caso o per motivi commerciali ma per una certa affinità con la sua sensibilità artistica. Mi riferisco in particolare a "Starfire" di Jerry Lordan, autore di grandi successi per gli Shadows come "Apache" e "Mustang" o a "Rum-Dee-Dum-Dee-Dah" di Les Vandyke compositore con cui aveva già collaborato nelle canzoni per Adam Faith. Non mancano compositori d’oltreoceano come Paul Anka "It Doesn’t Matter Any More" scritta dall'artista Canadese per Buddy Holly nel 1958 o la celeberrima "Spanish Harlem" di Jerry Leiber, Phil Spector e Mike Stoller e portata al successo da Ben E. King…….

L’album ha un ottimo suono stereofonico che aiuta a una miglior comprensione dei brani oltre a deliziare le orecchie. Protagoniste assolute sono le chitarre dalle tipiche vibrazioni che oltre a Barry altri musicisti avevano già sperimentato con successo: The Shadows, Duane Eddy, The Ventures, The Spotnicks…. La musica è caratterizzata dal particolare suono pizzicato delle corde con un ritmo sempre ben marcato e il supporto della sezione d’archi e/o delle tastiere e delle percussioni. Come eccezione "Like Waltz" (a6) che le annotazioni del retro copertina così descrivono "a very strong theme over a blues chord progression in three/four time. The effect is the beatiest waltz you are likely to hear". (Tema molto intenso su una progressione di accordi blues con una battuta di 3/4. Il risultato è quello di uno dei più energici valzer che probabilmente ascolterete). Tuttavia nonostante quanto affermato dalla sopra citata nota il brano, a mio modestissimo parere, ha un andamento non frenetico ma moderato in cui la ripetitività sonora della sezione archi talvolta mescolata a percussioni e tastiere concede ampio spazio all’evoluzioni della chitarra.

Notes : great album by the ingenious John Barry who, after his first soundtrack released in LP, "Beat Girl", faces the world of pop music with 15 instrumental tunes. Five of them are his own compositions and two: "Donna's Theme" and "Zapata" come from members of his group "John Barry Seven" and specifically by pianist Les Reed and guitarist Vic Flick. The other compositions are chosen not by chance or for commercial reasons but for a certain affinity with his artistic sensibility. I refer in particular to "Starfire" by Jerry Lordan, composer of big hits for the Shadows as "Apache" and "Mustang", or "Rum-Dum-Dee-Dee-Dah" by Les Vandyke with whom Barry had previously worked in songs for Adam Faith. There is no shortage about overseas composers & tunes such as Paul Anka, "It Does not Matter Any More" penned by Canadian artist for Buddy Holly in 1958, or the famous "Spanish Harlem" by Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller and Phil Spector and internationally popularized by Ben E. King….. This album has a great stereo sound which helps to a better understanding of the tunes as well as to delight the ears. The absolute stars are the twangy guitars which, a part Barry, had already been successfully tested also by other musicians : The Shadows, Duane Eddy, The Ventures, The Spotnicks .... The music is characterized by the particular "pizzicato" sound of strings with an ever well-marked rhythm and the support of string section and/or keyboards and percussion. As an exception "Like Waltz" (a6) and as reported in the liner notes of back cover : "a very strong theme over a blues chord progression in three / four time. The effect is the waltz beatiest you are likely to hear ". Despite the claims of the above mentioned annotation, in my humble opinion, this tune does not have lively but moderate development wherein sound repetitiveness of the string section blended with percussion and keyboards allowing ample space to the  guitar virtuosities.
