BLACK PEARLS -
Many of Trane's Prestige recordings don't vary so much stylistically. All are great and different, but Trane's sheets of sound method boast upon much of his soloing during this period.
There are two elements that set this disc apart from the rest. One, a diffent, more funky, almost Latin percussion sound that sweeps the tempo along nicely.
This album was recorded at the height of Trane's "sheets of sound" period. The opener, Black Pearls, starts off as a fairly typical hard bop tune in a standard A A B A form. However, shortly after Trane starts his solo his genius becomes apparent. Trane's solo is a miracle of light and sound. He furiously attacks the tune with an unbelievable ferocity. He spins long lines that are rhythmically and harmonically incredible. I can only imagine Byrd and Garland trying to follow him, slack-jawed in amazement.
After Trane, Byrd collects himself and actually turns in a nice solo that contrasts nicely with Trane's fire-breathing one. His lines are laid back but sufficiently exploratory.
Lover Come back to Me is a fast tempoed tune that is ok and Sweet Saphire Blues features Garland on an extended solo turn. Overall though, Trane's transcendent performance on "Pearls" alone is worth the price of the LP.

DAKAR -
This fine set from april, 1957 has two baritone saxophone players joining up with coltrane's tenor. Cecil Payne and Pepper Adams deliver fine performances on an album that is quite conventional when compared with what was soon to come from john coltrane. nevertheless, Mr. Trane hits many a moment of intensity here, and fans of his later work should enjoy this release. Also has the excellent piano man Mal Waldron is on board, too. It's a session that is well worth having and tremendously rare on vinyl.

Cat WalkTHE LAST TRANE - The Last Trane represents the final studio session for Prestige in the productive recording relationship between John Coltrane and Red Garland. Often with trumpeter Donald Byrd on Board, the two made a succession of dates in 1957 and '58 in which Coltrane's genius could be heard developing. His celebrated job with Thelonious Monk had Deepend his harmonic understanding and reinforced his determination to explore beyond the boundaries of standard jazz improvisations. In his remarkable blues solo on By the Numbers, Coltrane both aggirms his roots and announces a new direction. Compared with the other slow blues, Slowtrane, made eight months earlier, in instructive. Recording engineered by Rudy Van Gelder.

John Coltrane brought a new sound and style to jazz, and he applies it in his own unique way to the standard material of the storehouse of American music gathered from Broadway, Hollywood, and Tin Pan Alley. With the excellent rhythm team of Red Garland, Paul Chambers (both of whom had done so many concert, club and recording dates with him) and Jimmy Cobb, and the Miles-directed flugehorn of Wilbur Harden. Trane puts his personal stamp on numbers not done that often: Henry Nemo's "Don't Take Your Love From Me" and Fred Ahlert's "I'll Get By," and two more familiar yet still not overdone songs, Richard Rodger's "Spring Is Here" adnd Bronislau Kaper's "Inivation." Recording enginneered by Rudy Van Gelder. Track Listings 1. Don't Take Your Love From Me 2. I'll Get By (as long as I have you) 3. Spring is Here 4. Inviation LUSH LIFE - John Coltrane's Prestige years began when he joined the Miles Davis Quintet in 1955. Durning the next few years, when he was either with Davis or the Thelonious Monk Quartet, he functioned as both leader and sideman for this label. These recordings documnet the first part of his relatively short but highly influential time in the spotlight. Lush Life, a combination of standards and blues, treated in the unique Coltrane manner- sound wedded to material in a completely personal way - contains three tracks without a piano. This is the first itme he recorded in this manner, other than when Monk was "strolling", and it offers andother aspect from , and of, Trane. Track Listings 1. Like Someone In Love 2. I Love You 3. Trane's Slo Blues 4. Lush Life 5.I Hear a Rhapsody
CATTIN
This is as close as we'll ever get to hearing the President, Lester Young, with John Coltrane. And it is close, indeed, for Coltrane's tenor saxophone partner here is Paul Quinichette, who so successfully emulated Young that his fellow musicians nicknamed him the Vice President. Coltrane's drive and passion are contrasted with Quinichette's relaxed approach. But, particularly in "Sunday," the older man was a clear match in the swing department for the young lion Coltrane. The two have a fascinating "conversation" in "Anatomy," a head arrangement on the changes of "All the Things You Are." Included is a previously unreleased "Tea for Two." Cattin' is one of the most attractive items in the annals of tenor saxophone duos. Track Listings 1. Cattin' 2. Sunday 3. Exactly like you 4. Anatomy 5. Vodka 6.
