Description
This is the original 1971 US pressing of this album, I bought it new in 1972 from an import shop in Melbourne, taped it and have only played it a seven or eight times since then, most recently just before listing. The vinyl on both sides is clean and shiny with only a few minor scuffs from being taken in and out of the paper inner(I have placed it inside a new plastic cover inside the original paper inner cover to give greater protection). Both labels are clean, no writing or stickers (see photos 5 & 6) and both sides play loud and clear (VG+). The cover is stiff cardboard gate fold and is still rigid, with the spine intact and easily readable in the shelf. There is ring wear on both the front and back cover from storage (there was ring wear on it when I bought it sealed!), but both front and back still have a dull sheen and there is no writing or stickers on any of the covers. The inside covers of the gate fold are both clean although there is some light yellowing towards the opening on the right hand side from years of storage.(G+). The record still has the original ABC/Dunhill inner paper sleeve this is in great condition still flat, no tears or splits, again there is some light yellowing near the opening from years of storage (see photos 9 & 10) The line up for this album was:

These tracks were recorded on 26 August 1965, but they were not released as an album until 1971, four years after John Coltrane's death in 1967. The original recording was supervised by label head Bob Thiele, at RCA Victor Studios New York City, rather than Rudy Van Gelder who had produced Coltrane's sessions for Impulse Records prior to this. The producers for this LP, which entailed preparing the previously recorded tracks for release in 1971, were John's wife Alice Coltrane and Ed Michel. This is classic Coltrane from the mid sixties, with the side men that had been on "A Love Supreme" and "Live at Birdland" taking equal parts in the creation of these recordings. There was a connection between the four players that made the recordings from this period so good. While Coltrane is the defining player on all the tracks, the title track "Sun Ship" is given over for some time to McCoy Tyner for a lengthy pounding solo, and the last track on side two "Ascent" has Jimmy Garrison soloing for almost half the track, all the while on all the tracks Elvin Bishop keeping everything connected. There is a audio clip posting of the "Sun Ship"album on you tube, which, if you have not heard this style of music before will give you a clear idea of what the music was about..
