In the summer of 1961, John Coltrane was performing at New York's famed jazz venue, The Village Gate. Featuring a line-up completed by McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman, Elvin Jones and the arsonist Eric Dolphy, 'Evenings at the Village Gate' captures in 80 minutes of recording the creative and innovative spirit of the Coltrane-Dolphy tandem and a quintet (which expands to a sextet with the entry of Art Davis as second double bass player in "Africa") in rapid evolution as well as short-lived.
A completely unedited recording of two authentic forces of nature.

Nel mettere in scena una formazione completata da McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman, Elvin Jones e dall’incendiario Eric Dolphy, 'Evenings at the Village Gate' coglie in 80 minuti di registrazione lo spirito creativo e innovatore del tandem Coltrane-Dolphy e di un quintetto (che si allarga a sestetto con l’ingresso di Art Davis come secondo contrabbassista in "Africa") in rapida evoluzione quanto di breve durata.
