Description
This album was the last album Coltrane made before leaving Atlantic records for his new label Impulse! Records. Originally recorded and released in the US in 1961, this is the Australian pressing on London Atlantic from 1962. Atlantic records were released in Australia on the London label which were made in Australia by EMI, until in 1963 Festival Records Australia took over the distribution of Atlantic. The three musicians most associated with Coltrane's music from this time McCoy Tyner, piano, Reggie Workman, bass and Elvin Bishop, drums, make up the core of this group, with other notable musician appearing, including Freddie Hubbard, trumpet and Eric Dolphy on flute and alto sax (Eric Dolphy was under contract to Prestige Records at this time and is listed under the pseudonym George Lane; see photo 7 for line ups on each track). The vinyl on both sides is clean and shiny, no scratches, skips or jumps, with only a few minor scuffs and both sides play LOUD and clear, but there is some low level surface noise audible on the run in tracks and in some quieter parts, such as bass solos, mostly masked when the piano and horns are playing. For this reason I have graded the vinyl as G+. The cover is also in good condition, no splits or tears. The front still has a glossy finish although there is some light ring wear evident if held at an angle to the light and some small creases along the spine. The back has a dull sheen and there is staining around the edges and a mark just above the word "JOHN" in the heading where a label has been removed. The spine is still intact and can easily be read in the shelf, although this too has some staining(G+) It is interesting to note that the cover is printed in the UK by St James Press, London, and the record has "Made in Australia by EMI(Australia) Limited" printed on the label.
