Trying to figure out exactly who the leader of this session was from the front cover alone is more than a little tricky. Even a cursory listen, though, makes it clear that this is indeedJohn Jenkins' date. Not that it makes much of a difference anyway, as all participants deliver sublimely graceful and bluesy performances throughout. Trumpeter Donald Byrd is the most prominently featured among the other performers in this all-star sextet, one which also featured trombonist Curtis Fuller (five days before his appearance on John Coltrane's classic Blue Train LP), pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Doug Watkins, and a decidedly mellow Art Taylor on drums. Jenkins was one of the era's many Charlie Parker disciples and while those tendencies are more than apparent here, they are presented in a less-frantic and less-tortured form than that displayed by many of his contemporaries. In keeping with much of Regent and Savoy's output at the time, all four tunes are based upon very relaxed, mid-tempo bop heads. As compositions, they aren't entirely memorable, but that shouldn't take anything away from the sublime groove maintained throughout the LP. Recommended.
