~ condition ~


records are in Excellent Condition (they almost look
Near Mint) & have been fully play tested and sound great
and are clean & shiny with almost no wear and the
labels are also shiny, clean & wear-free

the cover is in Excellent Condition with bold bright
printing and has no writing, markings or seam splits
and the spine is fully intact w/ nice bold gold-embossed
printing (the spine on these types of 78rpm albums
is usually damaged) and while there is some light
edgewear, overall this is in really nice shape

the inner-pouches for these three records are
tight with no rips, tears or wear


~ David Stone Martin ~


illustrator David Stone Martin was one of the most
prolific and influential graphic designers of the postwar
era, creating over 400 mostly Jazz Lp Covers with his
signature hand-drawn style that perfectly captured the
energy and spontaneity of the idiom. he was from Chicago
and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and began his
career assisting social realist painter Ben Shahn designing
murals for the '33 World's Fair & then became the TVA
art director & also worked as an artist for Life Magazine
during WW II until later entering the music biz through his
longtime friendship with Norman Granz designing covers
for his Verve, Norgran Clef & Down Home record labels
as well as hundreds of other album covers and is the
most famous and collected artist of all jazz era and
his work has exhibited at Metropolitan Museum
of Art and at MOMA in New York City


~ John Kirby ~


John Kirby led a most unusual sextet during the
height of the big-band era comprised of trumpeter
Charlie Shavers, clarinetist Buster Bailey, Russell Procope
on Alto Sax, pianist Billy Kyle, O'Neil Spencer on drums
and himself on bass & while Shavers and Bailey could be
quite extroverted, the tightly arranged ensembles tended
to be very cool-toned and introverted yet virtuosic

Kirby was originally a tuba player, but switched to bass
in 1930 when he joined Fletcher Henderson's Orchestra
and was one of the better bassists of the '30s & also played
with Chick Webb's big band & by 1937 had his own group
at the Onyx Club with Frankie Newton & Pete Brown passing
through the band before the personnel was set & with
Kirby's wife Maxine Sullivan occasional singing
