When popular culture embraced John Lee, purists turned up their noses. The blues is not only a healer, it drinks brandy and wears jeans. Dass diese Platte wiederveröffentlicht wurde, ist ein wunderbarer Glücksfall für alle Bluesfreunde. Klanglich hat hier Bernie Grundman aus dem Original Analogband einen herrlich warmen und dabei sehr präzisen Sound gezaubert, da dürfte manchen vor Staunen der Mund offen stehen!
Unter Kritikern wurde dieses Album recht unterschiedlich bewertet, doch der Erfolg gibt dem Konzept für „The Healer“ recht. Es war nicht nur ein traumhaftes Comeback von John Lee Hooker in der internationalen Szene, sondern auch ein Auflauf jeder Menge Stars: Carlos Santana mit seiner Band, Bonnie Raitt, Robert Cray, Canned Heat, Los Lobos und Charlie Musselwhite! Bereits das Titelstück (mit Santana) ist bereits ein moderner Bluesklassiker, der uns immer wieder in guten Radiosendungen begegnet. Hooker gelang durch die recht unterschiedlichen Musiker, die den Songs ihren eigenen Touch verliehen, den Zugang zu einem breiterem Publikum, also auch der Pop-und Rockwelt. Die Platte ist somit ein Bindeglied zwischen dem urbanen Blues, für den Hooker (und auch Musselwhite!) stehen und der Musik der späten 80er Jahre.
