Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and highly attractive with just a couple of fine and faint spindle marks on side one, and just one tiny one on side two. One small dull spot on side one, barely showing with full-on viewing. Another wonderful very early pressed record from the same very clean lot I am currently offering (some ending/ended Sunday). Hardly played and with fantastic clean sound.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Lennon’s first great ‘Solo’ album, arguably the best he ever made. A hugely powerful set where Lennon allowed his tonsils and heart to bleed in a powerful exhumation of many of his demons. This includes the brilliant ‘Working Class Hero’, one of my personal favourites and every song included here is quite brilliant, personal, powerful and striking. After the early solo albums which offered little in the way of ‘music’, but were more collages of avant garde experimentalism that all sold very poorly, this was something of a revelation and a massive return to form and public attention. It charted at 11 in the UK and paved the way for great success thereafter. A monumental issue and never easy to find complete as an early pressing that includes the dedicated inner sleeve – here in very clean and unsplit condition. This appears hardly played and comes from a top collection with several already on offer or recently sold. A copy that does this classic nigh-on maximum justice and fans of the legendary ex-Beatle are sure to enjoy it.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single fully laminated format. Printed and made in England and includes the original dedicated lyric inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: Quite a thin and flimsy cover so often prone to major laminate issues, this has few. Both sides retain superb shine, freshness and clarity with just a lift on the front spine edge which hardly even shows when viewed full on, and a tiny one near the bottom right corner. The lack of significant dulling (barely any) or rim impression (ultra faint under light) is a considerable plus and really does make a considerable difference for good looks. Most of any laminate creasing are very fine and faint and amongst the least I have yet seen. This famous cover has hardly aged at all with both graphics looking very impressive.

Top Edge: Practically unworn: ultra smooth, clean and straight.

Bottom Edge: Largely the same, the odd minute burr trace to the end back panel being ultra critical.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear, a very gentle ‘curl’ to the very bottom corner, a trait of laminate tightening over the years and hard to avoid, here only mild, this cover has barely bowed at all. Any thickening or burring tiny and light as seen critically end-on, this is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. The narrow unprotected laminate end line clean and unworn.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight, but made thin, possibly a little compressed but most-all of these I have seen have a very narrow depth. All text is perfect and unworn under the very solid and uncracked laminate. Centering is perfect which lessens the likelihood of major compression.

Corners: Any tip rubbing tiny and light and all retain excellent shape with no dinks and hardly even a tip crease.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this famous early 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): and one of the best examples of this inner I have ever seen for a while. Only marked down for a number written on a corner, to the right of the 9/10/70 print as seen in close-up. An unlined lyric insert with the original small graphic and dedication to Yoko from John (again in the same close-up). A typically fragile and thin paper inner but this has avoided any edge splits and barely any creasing at all. Any hint of rim impression minuscule with just a few traces of tone spots which are tiny. Still incredibly white and hardly aged. An inner which is fairly rare, later to be replaced by a plain white alternative, the dedication and graphic, of course, gives this a more personel feel and look and this will prove very difficult to find better. Just the small black ink number the only blemish of note.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-) / EXCELLENT(+): side wo has a small surface mark on the first song that has NO SOUND whatsoever. This minor blemish apart, a superb visual copy that offers possibly the cleanest sound I have yet heard from an album that sometimes can crackle. Very clean with super shine and quite heavily pressed. Another gem recently acquired and easily up to the standards of the others from the source. Any other surface traces are minimal, tiny and faint, even viewed under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This very impressive record plays up to it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and utmost detail from a very early, clean pressed copy. A very powerful and dynamic production gives this album real edge and drama. No pressing issues or crackle, it will taken an exceptional example to better this. Few copies will match or outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful and landmark recording within the Lennon catalogue. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. Do not underestimate how difficult this one is find like this, like so many Beatles-related records, many were heavily played on very basic record players. This one has never been near such a thing.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
