Description
Offered here is an EXTREMELY RARE John Lennon two-sided 10 inch acetate on Apple Records. One side is Luck Of The Irish recorded on Halloween,1971 and the other side is Attica State recorded October 9, 1971. Both labels read, "Apple Records Inc.,1700 Broadway,New York,NY 10019,USA" Luck Of The Irish is 2:30 run time and Attica State is 2:50 run time. Both sides read,"A preview from the new John & Yoko/Plastic Ono Band LP Live Jam". The acetate plays at 45 RPM. Both songs are NOT the released versions that we are familiar with! Instead, they sound like home demos! Luck Of The Irish has John playing acoustic guitar and singing with Yoko and Attica State begins with John strumming an acoustic guitar and counting,"One, two,three,four"- he then continues to play the acoustic guitar and sings, joined at times by Yoko. October 9, 1971 was also John Lennon's 31st birthday. He was in Syracuse singing this song with various friends but not on THIS acetate! It is just him and Yoko!
PROVENANCE FOR THIS RARE PIECE OF RECORDED HISTORY: I am the second owner of record, as this came out of my personal collection. I purchased it from a retired CBS-SONY USA executive. In the late 60's, this person ran an underground comic book shop in Greenwich Village. One of his custoomers was a DJ and told him how much fun it was, so he, being adrift as most people in their twenties are, decided to try his hand as a DJ also! He soon found he couldn't keep the comic book shop and be a DJ, so he closed the comic book shop and became a DJ full time. In November of 1971, he was at a party and met John Lennon. He remarked to John that he had been a DJ in NYC for the past 3 years and he couldn't get any exclusive breaks on songs because they went to all the "big" DJs. They exchanged pleasantries and addresses and said they would communicate in the future. A few weeks later, a small package from John Lennon containing this acetate arrived in the DJs' mailbox. He played it a few times and just filed it away in his collection. He later became a very successful DJ and made the successful leap into Columbia records who then was taken over by SONY. This person rose through the ranks and became a VERY big executive of SONY CBS USA.
The Live Jam LP was not issued and instead a different Live Jam LP was issued with The Sometime In New York City LP in June of 1972. These two acetate songs are home-working demos and as far as I know, are unavailable anywhere else in these versions!
Condition:Tiny white mark next to center hole on Luck Of The Irish, tiny cellulose-edge chip on Attica State (not affecting play).
