JOHN MARTYN – London Conversation ISLAND PINK RIM LP // ILP 952 (UK, Mono, Early 1970s)
Here’s a superb condition copy of John’s debut LP in mono – originally released on the 1st full pink label (copies of which now sell very strongly into 3 figures), this is the 'pink rim' press of this landmark LP. It’s survived in fabulous shape – both sleeve & vinyl are close to Mint.
Matrices (stamped): ILP 952 A-2U / ILP 952 B-2U
The fully laminated E.J Day manufactured sleeve is a great example. Near to full whiteness, superb spine, NO splits, writing, tears, edge wear or appreciable ring impression. A slight dink to the bottom left corner and a slight crease to the front top right corner is all to report on the front. Slight creasing to the back but overall superb structure and lovely, shiny laminate means this deserves at least an EX+ (Excellent Plus) grade.
The pink rim, ‘palm tree’ labels are just as you’d want them. NO signs of anything at all. NO writing, residue, staining or dirt and not even a single spindle trace to the centre hole. Immaculate.
The medium weight vinyl is simply magnificent. Visually, near to new looking, I picked up one light (virtually invisible) scuff only to one side. Apart from that – nothing! NO scratches, hairlines, dirt, scrapes – just a gleaming disc, looking unplayed. Easily worthy of a visual M- (Mint Minus) grade. Looks just beautiful...
IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO BOTH SIDES and plays wonderfully clear. There is a touch of surface static – occasionally discernible but NO snap or pops. NO clicks, hiss, distortion or loss of fidelity/lack of definition. A big, rich mono sound throughout.
A near perfect early copy of this evergreen Martyn long player which will be hard to beat. Presented in the period blue Island inner.
