This album was purchased by me in 1969 and has been in my personal collection for an unbelievable 41 years from new. I have only played this two or thrtee times originally to record on to tape only. This has also been stored in a record case in a protected sleeve for all of its storage life. The vinyl was removed from the cover and stored seperately, and the cover encased between two cardboards for protection!,, which is the way that i have always stored my vinyls!!!!!!! You will never need to upgrade from this awesome album i dought you will ever find better!!!! This is the original 1st UK pressing Unboxed Decca labels and in the awesome mono format! Unbeleivably rare to find like this! Absolutely stunning perfect audio throughout!! The playing surface is impecable near mint!! Over 41 years old like this!!!!!
John Mayall OBE (born November 29, 1933) is a pioneering English blues singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. His musical career spans over fifty years but the most notable episode in it occurred during the late '60s. He was the founder of John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers and has been influential in the careers of many instrumentalists, including Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, Peter Green, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Mick Taylor, Don Harris, Harvey Mandel, Larry Taylor, Aynsley Dunbar, Jon Hiseman, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Andy Fraser, Walter Trout, Coco Montoya, Johnny Almond, and Jon Mark!!!
.
Blues from Laurel Canyon is a 1968 album by John Mayall, featuring British blues music. It was his first album after the breakup of his band the Bluesbreakers on 14 July 1968. It was also his last album with Decca before moving to Polydor!!!!.
John Mayall sings and plays harmonica, organ and guitar on the album. Other musicians include a young Mick Taylor (guitar), Colin Allen (drums) and Stephen Thompson (bass). The guitarist Peter Green featured on the track First Time Alone. The engineer was Derek Varnals. All the songs on the album were written by John Mayall. It was recorded at Decca Studios in West Hampstead, London, England between 26 and 28 August 1968, and was released on the Decca label!!!!.
The title of the album derives from Laurel Canyon, California, USA (in the Los Angeles area) where John Mayall subsequently lived from 1969 to 1979. It forms a record of his visit there before moving to the US on a more permanent basis. The area was favoured by many musicians at the time!.
The album was innovative for its time, especially by the standards of blues recordings. The first track opens with a recording of a jet airliner landing, dissolving into the driving rhythm of the song. There were no visible track divisions on the vinyl album. Some songs fade or segue into the next track, others stop on a chord which is immediately followed by the introduction of the next track. Tabla drums are used, as is the technique of hitting guitar strings with a drumstick. The final track is a short song which moves into an extended lead guitar solo underscored by Mayall's Hammond organ, fading into a simple unaccompanied guitar figure which repeats until it too fades!!!.
The lyrics are autobiographical and refer, if obliquely, to people Mayall met on his first visit, such as Frank Zappa and Moon Unit Zappa (on 2401) and the band Canned Heat (on The Bear). The identity of Miss James, the romantic interest described in loving detail in the second half of the album, is not known!!!.
From a technical point of view, the album demonstrates the limitations of the recording technology of the time. A substantial number of vinyl albums were issued in monophonic format, since many home record players, at least in the United Kingdom, could not reproduce stereophonic sound. On the stereophonic releases, including the CD re-releases, the stereo imaging separates the instruments quite strongly. For instance, in the song Walking on Sunset, the drumkit, situated on the left, is inaudible in the right hand channel. The overall impression is that of being in a hallway with several rooms off it, each one containing a particular instrument. There is no sense of being in a room with several instruments playing and generating an ambient sound-field, as might be expected from a live recording, or one mixed with more available sound inputs!!

The Vinyl
The vinyl lays perfectly flat on the turntable and is the very thick ,heavy ,chunky slab of vinyl only found like this on the earliest pressings. Later press are much morre flimsier and less robust! On initial inspection this vinyl looks almost like new in my opinion, only played a handful of times by me over 38 years ago!!! unbelievably rare any marks that could possible be seen would be only caused by the vinyl been slid in and out of its sleeve!!! Absolutely (no) needle scratches or any marks that could effect the play at all!!!!!!!!!NEAR PRISTINE CONDITION!!!!!!
The Audio Quality
I have played this through prior to listing at very loud volume on a top system, importantly using a dedicated mono cartridge! The audio is as good as it gets in my opinion! Absolutely near perfect on my systems throughout! Cristal clear and vibrant throughout on all frequencies! Please note! These early mono pressings have thicker and deeper grooves than the stereo counterpart pressings and due to some of the very quiet tracks during the play of this album it is imperitive to have top quality vinyl when playing these to produce cristal clear audio, This vinyl is the best that I have heard almost cd quality throughout and these 1st pressings on vinyl cannot be surpassed in any other format in my personal opinion. This audio grades as near mint as good as it gets in my opinion!! I would class myself as highly critical please look at my completed listings of records that i have sold of this calaber and you will see that i normally get it right!! Please note, Please allow for the very minor static isolated tick (not consistant throughout the audio)!! I would grade the audio as near mint on my systems!!
Points to note! This album has been stored in a case for at least 40 years and has been laying dormant! From my experiance, a build up of dirt and dust in the grooves causes static crackle\ticks. A constant clean before each play reduces this static and hence improves the audio quality! TOP! TOP! AUDIO ON ALL FREQUENCIES! THIS WILL BE HARD TO SURPASS!
Please note! I always addd this disclaimer! Please allow for the odd isolated static tick (not) consistant throughout the audio! Please remember that this is a 41 year old vinyl that would have originally been played on a 41 year old system!
The labels
Absolutely perfect they are almost as new on initial inspection, any visable signs of spidering can only be seen angled to a light, these can be counted on one hand! This looks and sounds barely ever played!! (no marks see photos) Features the early red Unboxed Decca Labels! no spindle ware the hole is perfectly round!
The record sleeve
Thjis is the original decca sleeve becoming fragile very slightly and light creases with age no splits or tares must be at least excellent
The cover
This is perhapes the hardest of covers to find in decent condition let alone like this one!!! This being the original LAMINATED FRONT ROBERT STACE printed cover! normally seen in a terible state with many creases!! There are (no) splits or tares and hardly any storage ware to talk of (NO) real creases In my opinion, just very minor laminate crease lines near the spine on the front only you will find it hard to find a better copy! The front and rear is almost like new!! with (no) horrible names or marks at all!!! this is absolutely superbe!!! TRY TO FIND A BETTER COVER AFTER 38 YEARS so rare to find like this. This must grade at least excellent plus in my opinion.
