Label Conditions: Both little short of immaculate: just one fine spindle mark on side two, and hardly even a trace on side one. These are as clean and attractive as new and will rarely be seen better.

Brief Info: A brilliant album inspired by his visit to the US where he eventually ended up living. This was his first album after the breakup of the Bluesbreakers and also was his final release on Decca before signing to Polydor. The playing surfaces of the record are unbanded as the songs blend into each other to form a musical suite based on his experiences of his visit and the people he met. One such meeting was with Frank and Gail Zappa and his his daughter Moon Unit, then a baby. The song ‘2401’ where Mayall describes Zappa as his hero, has references to The Mothers and even the GTO’s, Miss Christine specifically. The album is something of a recording triumph and sounds stunning in real stereo. It starts with a jet aircraft roaring from speaker to speaker and then blends into the music, a very dramatic and effective opening and the quality never lets up. With, or without The Bluesbreakers, Mayall has rarely sounded better or more inspired than this. An album that will delight even non-blues fans, this is a documentary tour de force and still sounds as fresh and vibrant as when first issued. In terms of condition, the cover is impressive and the record plays very well indeed even though it does include some very quiet passages that will test any record of this considerable age. So even on a record that appears very little used, total silence is a near impossible ask, but this gives a lovely clean account and it was a pleasure to play-grade with little unwanted. For those still to enjoy Mayall’s quality brand of blues-rock, there are few better places to start.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a gatefold format with a single thickness front. Both front and back are Clarifoil laminated and there is NO peep-hole on the back, this mono/stereo indicator came slightly later in 1969 making this one of the earliest pressings confirmed by the matrix numbers. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both sides retain fine shine, clarity and freshness and has barely any traces of any rubbing or dulling, even viewed under angled light. A little lifting on the spine edge of both sides, but as this laminate is the less glossy type which was more the standard finish on this cover, it shows little and is amongst the least I have seen on this sleeve. That apart, all other laminate fully adhered which is no mean feat for Clarifoil that does tend to contract and tighten. The lack of creasing is a significant plus, especially with the thin card front. No press marks or indentations the and graphics both sides look very impressive, both these outer cover faces will prove difficult to find much better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both crisp, clean and fresh again with little to fault at all. The thin front still lies flat when closed with no bowing or bending.

Top Edges: The main fold has minor patchy rub traces and a small pressure mark near the centre but no split and showing little (and then only with edge-on viewing). The front remains crisp and mostly very sharp with any hint of thickening or burring tiny and faint, both remain straight.

Bottom Edges: As above but with no pressure mark.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, and very sharp with little wear at all. Again, any hint of thickening or burring minuscule and both guranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. Record enters on this back edge.

Spine and Text: Solid and straight with any compression light, there is a gentle hint of tilt to right towards the bottom. Folded square, so the edges meet up closely together and near parallel. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: All crisp and sharp and very neat looking. Any tip rubs are tiny and faint with very fine to better than excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A really impressive all-round example of this quite fragile 1960’s dedicated stereo cover, one that will prove very difficult find much better. This attractive item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): the Decca blue text on white polylined inner has only gently aged with a little natural darkening but has barely any damage at all. Both window circles are pristine and the lining ultra clear with a only light crinkle. Devoid of creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This one is date-coded 078.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A small few and mainly very fine and light surface marks mostly seen with scrutiny under bright angled light, there are NO penetrating scratches and finding this vintage early cut record better looking will prove immensely difficult. This is quite a long and unbanded record, it has some very compact grooves which makes ultra fine hairline traces difficult to totally avoid on the most carefully preserved and handled record. A record that defies it’s great age and it should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quite scarce unboxed original stereo record plays for most, even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. One of the most difficult in the Decca-era Mayall catalogue due to several quiet sections – finding one with no audio blemishes is a considerable ask with so many being ruined by the heavy-tracking, thick stylus of the time. This has powerful, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. If the stereo format is your choice, few will ever better this one I feel sure. Clear, crisp and focused sound with no distortion or pressing noises – Decca, for me the very best record manufacturer rarely fail to please and this is no exception. Nothing of any real spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, the odd gentle hint it is a 45-year-old record being listened too rather than a squeaky clean digital alternative, personally, I have no issue with that. This copy will prove difficult to find substantially better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
