A real sleeper – and a hip little set that's well worth the listen! Spider's a pretty soulful tenor player in his own right, but one of the things that makes the record really great is work by a set of guest players that include Joe Locke on vibes, Jimmy Owens on trumpet, Pepper Adams on Baritone, and Billy Skinner on trumpet. The album shifts between smoother, soulfully oriented jazz and a few more traditionally hardbop numbers – swinging along a pace that's rough, but which marks them with a sense of honesty that's really appreciated, given the time and setting. The album includes one standout jazzy groover – the amazing "A Lil Different", a great track that starts off straight, then leaps into a blend of funky bass, keyboards, and vibes that really really grooves! Other tracks include the Jimmy Owens funk number "Uh Ah", plus "That's Nice", "Nica's Dream", and "Never Can Say Goodbye".
