JOHNNY BLUE SKIES & THE DARK CLOUDS - Mutiny After Midnight (VINYL LP, 2026)
Review from another site: When Sturgill Simpson launched his Johnny Blue Skies alter ego in 2024, it seemed like more of a shift in attitude than approach. His debut, Passage du Désir, was almost celebratory, a revival of spirit and creativity. Two years later, he offers a follow-up that, in its own restless way, helps cement the Blue Skies ethos. Described by Simpson as a dance record, Mutiny After Midnight combines disco and funk grooves with country-soul, boogie, and straight-up rock & roll. Lyrically, it's also a wild ride, promoting joy, tenderness, and sex while overtly addressing political oppression, cultural collapse, and art as rebellion. It's fiery and unflinching but fun, a reflection of Johnny Blue Skies' outlook over the sometimes more dour Simpson. Even its release was an act of rebellion. After "accidentally leaking" the album online for one week only, Simpson gave Mutiny After Midnight a traditional physical-only release, avoiding digital platforms altogether in favor of vinyl, CDs, and tapes. What's more, the strategy worked -- physical sales helped propel it to number three on the Billboard 200.
