JOHNNY CASH
FOLSOM PRISON BLUES
In November of 1955, Johnny Cash's first record "Cry, Cry, Cry" shot up the country charts landing at #14. It must have been quite a rush to get a break like that. As a follow up, Sun Record got out this 2nd single (#232) of "Folsom Prison Blues" and "So Doggone Lonesome." It too was a hit, with BOTH sides tearing up the country charts to the #4 slot.
This is a vintage pressing of that single as a 78rpm original. As you can imagine, the survival rate for this record on 78rpm is quite low – and originals don’t turn up that frequently
In June of 1968, Cash's live version was his newest hit and the song caught the attention of Gordon Jenkins, who thought it was remarkably similar to his tune "Crescent City Blues" which was waxed back in 1953. Not only did Jenkins think it remarkably similar, so did a jury and Cash was required to settle over the song. What was the settlement? That's still a secret, but Gordon Jenkins stopped talking about it after that.
