For auction is the JOHNNY GRIFFIN QUARTET's "Way Out,"  on Riverside RLP 12-274, MONO, DG, 1958. With Kenny Drew, Wilbur Ware, Philly Joe Jones.

SOUND: VG or better.

It has been machine-cleaned and I listened to both sides completely. The bad news: there is a soft "thump" heard for about 30-40 seconds at the beginning of A1 ("Where's Your Overcoat, Boy?"). I'm not sure how else to describe it. It's not a "pop," but a low-pitch, soft, "bump" that reminds me of the sound of a car's tires going over sections of pavement. I had to put the needle back to the beginning to make sure I was hearing it. In other words, it is easy enough to ignore, or miss altogether.  Now the good news: the rest of the record sounds awesome! Just great! Clear, clean and vibrant. Overall (98%), a beautiful sounding record.

VINYL: VG or better.

Visually, the vinyl shows faint scuffs/smudges that are nothing more than routine wear. The source of the "bump" described above is a raised area, about twice the size of a pin-head, in the first few grooves of side A. It looks like a tiny "bubble" in the vinyl. I don't know what it's called -- I'm sure audiophiles have a technical name for it, but I don't! (I've done my very best to describe this anomaly, and I've tried to photograph it, see the pics). The record is deep-grooved on both sides.  

COVER: VG+/NM

The cover is beautiful. It is made of heavy cardboard. The edges are solid and straight, with very slight fraying on the corners, which are still fairly sharp. The front is laminated and still retains most of its  gloss. Both front and back are unmarked and clean. The back has a few routine age-spots and a tiny bit of ring-wear. Also on the back is a "Promo" stamp.  Overall, this 60-year-old album jacket is beautiful!

I've gone out of my way to be super-critical and transparent about this record. The little "bump" is unfortunate, but the effect on the playback is minor.  It's a desirable record that sounds great overall! No reserve, bidding starts at $20.

Every record I auction has been cleaned on a Nitty Gritty vacuum/cleaner. I played every record to determine if there are static, tics, pops, hisses, what have you. I endeavor to thoroughly report any extraneous audio "noise" or problems of any significance. Other than that, I will report on the general condition of each record, both vinyl and jacket, according to Goldmine standards, to the best of my ability. 

Every record is put into a new, clean sleeve insert. In the case of an interesting original sleeve insert, I'll include that in the sale.  

If you're into this stuff, you might want to save me to your seller's list and check back periodically. I'll be putting a lot of vintage jazz records up for auction.
