Johnny Guitar Watson, the legendary guitar blues hero (How legendary? Just listen to Steve Miller's "Gangster of Love" and you'll find out) only had two albums in the first two decades of his career: The giga-rare album on KING label and this, his 1964 album for Chess. He went on to record many albums during his "funk" phase in the 1970's but never again really regained  his blues stature and prowess (for his "other" prowess, make sure to read Etta James' memoirs). Mega-rare and unavailable in any way, manner or format for almost 40 years!!! Plus, what we have here is a copy soooooo MINT that we honestly doubt that the record was  played more than once or twice in its entire history. Miss it and weep your heart out. The album includes a great rendition of Lowell Fulson's classic "Reconsider Baby" plus seven other tracks.

CONDITION:

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)          Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 30:1.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a small peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker, delicately masked/camouflaged with a brown marker (less than ¼ square inch in size).

-        Cover has a small cutout hole in one of the corners

-        Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners.  (VISIBLE ON FRONT SIDE ONLY)

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2  (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the top and bottom seams

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  / bent.

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No stamps

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.

IMPORTANT CORRECTION !!!

Unfortunately, we have unexpectedly discovered a serious flaw with this disc:  the record has a small (microscopic, really) crack in the vinyl in the play area. The crack spreads across two tracks on each side, BUT IS COMPLETELY INAUDIBLE AND DOES NOT AFFECT PLAYING IN THE LEAST. The crack is so tiny that you can easily play the disc repeatedly without ever noticing it: it has to be viewed under certain angle to notice. Otherwise, the disc is exactly as described and plays beautifully (NEAR MINT) from start to finish, and without any skips, sticks, pops or clicks.

Because any crack in the vinyl is a fatal flaw which renders our description inaccurate, we are cautioning the bidders on this item to exercise caution and to familiarize with this correction of our  description BEFORE bidding.

We are not going to terminate this auction item, as it is audibly beautiful and plays near mint despite the flaw.  However, we WILL empty all bids received as of Saturday, June 03, 2017 at 01:30 as we consider them placed wrongly, based on incomplete description and under the wrong assumption.  Those bidders who place the bid(s) AFTER our correction has been posted have been duly and properly warned about the crack in the vinyl.
