STEPPING STONES / FRAGMENTS OF FEAR ... 7-inch, 45rpm OST single by JOHNNY HARRIS. Original Italian pressing on WARNER BROS label (WB 1057), from 1970. Super-happy to offer up another copy of an outstanding double-sider showcasing the psychedelic funk and hippie lounge sound of this cult UK producer / arranger and conductor. Quintessentially English with counter-culture rock influences of the period. Features 2 killer soundtrack themes from his legendary Movements Lp released in Italy on an elusive 7inch with disturbing picture sleeve artwork. STEPPING STONES is Johnny's pièce de résistance and funkiest moment on wax. A unique and truly unhinged exercise in orchestrated breaks and beats... Stabbing strings / demonic flute solos by Harold McNair / strung-out fuzz distortions / demented bass and hammond solos / bongos - cowbells and bboy drum skills that will blow you away :) Great for DJs with booming production sound. The stoned lounge of FRAGMENTS OF FEAR is also superb. Obsessive rhythms / beautifully scored strings and Dusty Fingers style hip hop beats create an intentionally wasted and ghostly ambience. Both sides and alternative versions of this mini masterpiece can also be heard on the score to an obscure British horror film called Fragments of Fear. A dark psychological thriller directed by Richard Caspar Sarafian starring David Hemmings as a recovering ex junkie slipping into paranoid delusion (hence the nightmarish heroin trip sleeve art and schizophrenic mood music to match). When Harris was first approached to compose the score, the film director visualised mood music with "spikey" elements to reference the drug / needle abuse of the main character in the film. Seldom comes up for auction in nice condition. An all-time personal favourite. Rare OST 45!!!
Musicians of note: Johnny Harris - piano / Harold McNair - flute / Herbie Flowers - fender bass / Harold Fisher - drums / Chris Spedding - electric & acoustic guitar / Micky Gee - wah wah guitar (the guy from Tom Jones' funky mod backing band ;) / Roger Coulam - organ / Johnny Dean - bongos / percussion
Our record grading: SEALED / M- / VG++ / VG+ / VG acid lsd hippie acidic rock psych
Vinyl is closer to shiny M- condition overall with just a couple of light scuffs and hairlines to the "Fragments Of Fear" side. Otherwise, minimal imperfections from sleeve removal / storage, in general. A couple of soft pops / soft ticks in places (as you can hear on our soundclip). Some light surface noises to intros but all copies have this. Mini mark to top area of one side of label (see photo). The soft card picture sleeve is in strong VG+ condition overall regardless of any ring creasing / areas of wear to the corners or edges. Mini tear to the middle of the open side. Natural age discoloration / ring dirt marks / creasing and some dirt spots cum blemishes to back sleeve. Rare OST 45!!!
