Vibe player Johnny Lytle has several killer soul jazz albums from a variety of labels in the 60's but rest assured, this is by far the BEST and most sought after album!! The music is light years ahead of his jazz recordings and has his sextet getting down and dirty!! The standout tunes are Lytle's tunes, "GUNKY"...which is a tightly woven funk jazz groove; "THE NEW VILLAGE CALLER" has a sinister sound that groove collectors drool over and the cool 17 minute suite on side 2 titled "THE SOULFUL REBEL SUITE"...truly a killer album!! Side musicians are stellar and include: Billy Nunn (organ and electric piano), Ron Carter (electric bass), Ray Barreto (conga), David Spinozza (guitar), and Jozell Carter (drums). This album is getting real hard to find and is listed in Peter Wermelinger's "Funky & Groovy Music Records Lexicon" which lists the essential funk/groove recordings. This gets my highest recommendation and You better believe I have a copy in my archives and you should too!! GOOD LUCK...plenty of cool tunes for you coming, so keep an eye out.
