JOHNNY NICOL - TRACES LP

AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINAL JAZZ GUITAR

Thank you for looking at my item.

Here on auction is an opportunity for you to bid for Johnny Nicol’s second album entitled Traces released in 1979.  For those of you that haven’t heard of Johnny Nicol he is without doubt one of Australia’s musical gems.  Although never in the mainstream, Johnny Nicol provides a great modern jazz guitar sound and a voice as smooth as silk.  He is one of the few Australian Aboriginals to record in the jazz genre.  Sadly he had to initially hide his Aboriginality when he started as a member of the Maori Troubadours in 1960.  Johnny hailed from North Queensland.

To describe his music is not all that clear cut but many say he was playing George Benson before George Benson.  There is no doubt that there are calypso/bossa nova/funk influences in his playing.  Acid jazz and lounge music are other descriptions of his music but whatever you want to call it this music is cool to the max.

Complimenting the talent of Johnny Nicol are some of Australia’s best musicians including Don Burrows, Bob, Tony Ansell, Jim Kelly, Doug Gallacher, Ian Bloxsom, Kerry Biddell and Alison McCallum.  It is obvious by this list of support musicians that Johnny’s talents are rated highly.
