"Singer-guitarist Johnny Shines is unquestionably one of the more significant discoveries, or rediscoveries, of the blues revival. In recent years he had not recorded widely, yet his early sides made in the late 1940's and early '50's for the Columbia, Chess and J.O.B. labels are rightly prized by blues fans. These performances revealed a powerful and assured worker in the Mississippi blues traditions, the music only slightly updated through amplification and its ensemble format. A masterful slide guitarist and a passionate, intense singer, Shines demonstrated in his recordings (particularly the marvelous "Ramblin'" on J.O.B.) a strong influence from Robert Johnson, aspects of whose brilliant, distinctive music have shaped modern blues through the work of such performers as Muddy Waters and Elmore James, each of whom brought different facets of Johnson's music to high levels of development and popularity.

Johnny Shines was born 1915 in Mississippi where he met Robert Johnson. In the 50´s he came to Chicago, where he played Chicago Blues together with Big Walter, Willie Dixon and Sunnyland Slim! In the 80´s he made tours just alone on acoustic guitar! He had a great voice and was one of the best in the Blues world until a stroke stopped him.
